Personal Narrative: Childhood Obesity

Throughout elementary school I was a shy individual. Consequently, I disliked my peers reading my literary work and I utterly despised class presentations. Yet in grade six, I was tasked with the assignment of composing an argumentative essay based the idea that “restaurants create obesity”. I had written a pro argument with various sub points including the proposition that restaurants encourage weight gain and subsequently diabetes. Even at my young age, I was very aware that my audience was my class mates, one of which had diabetes. I recall being so terrified that my essay would offend her and my classmates, that I nearly refused to present. Yet after arguing my points, I not only won the debate but my classmate with diabetes also approached me to say that she agree with me and that
Out of sheer boredom, I decided to take on the endeavour and I embarked on my first research paper. This was an ambitious project, as I had never written a research project and I had a minute idea of references and sources. It was also quite daunting as my essay was to be read by professors at the University of British Columbia. Fifteen pages later and countless hours of research, I found myself nervously pressing the submit button. I was completely convinced that nothing would come from my effort, yet a month later I was invited to present at my findings at the UBC.
