Personal Narrative: A Place To Float In The Water
I descended into the lukewarm pool like a duckling about to swim for the first time.
I felt very anxious and crestfallen because my brother had made me an object of ridicule because I was not so good at swimming. “Place your hands on the pavement”, Mr. Jay, my swimming instructor pointed out. “I’m trying to let half of my body float in the water, but I can’t, can you help me do that?”, I asked. Mr. Jay jumped into the water and swam toward me and he illustrated how I can float on the water by lying on my back. I used the floating method to stay afloat on the water for about ten minutes until… “Aargh!” I screamed because something had just pulled me under water and pushed me back out to the water surface. I didn’t realize that my brother had snuck

Jay quickly illustrated how I can swim with the pool noodle under my arms. I quickly learned the process however when I tried to do it, I backslid in doing so. “He can’t even do it right, he’s just moving his arms and legs to no avail”, my brother laughed. Driven bizarre by the absurd words that my brother had sputtered out, I started moving my hands more vigorously in order to prove my brother wrong, however, I didn’t notice that my pool noodle under my arm was slipping off.
Splash! I went underwater, that was when I made the worst of my life, I started breathing quickly. I tried to remember what Mr. Jay instructed that I should do if I am in an alarming situation like this.
Always remember that if you have a fall into the water or you simply can't move your limbs -try floating on your back. Don't flail around or start breathing quickly if you can't swim; simply lie back as flat as you can, and let the water carry you while you regain your poise.
I quickly held my breath and tried to lie on my back as flat as I can.
After what seemed like years to me, I felt the heat of the scorching sun caressing my body.
“Help! help! help!” I shouted out because of the distinctive event that had happened under

It was about 10:00 and it was time for our free period when we were allowed to go down the slides, the diving boards, or just swim on our own. Three of my buddies said they were going to go off the high dive, I was too shy to speak up about being afraid. I knew it was too little too late now I had to face my fears and just jump. We got in line, and it was as if I was in a trans just staring at everyone climb up the ladder and without hesitation jump and plunge into the icy water. Before I knew it I was on deck and I could feel stomach churning a little bit, as if on cue I heard the splash of Sam and knew it was my turn. I grabbed the metal bars and slowly made my way to the top, I felt like I was a mile off the…

I was a fake fish that was thrown onto the pool deck and left to dry. The pool had its shallow ends and it had even deeper ones for those who knew how to swim. I stared at the 6 ft area wanting to jump in and swim with the others. I walked off the pool deck in despair and onto the grass to sit on my towel and reevaluate my…

    Essay On Nathan Honeycutt

Family gatherings are supposed to be a fun and happy occasion, where family members come together, talk, eat, and have fun. This was not the case for 7 year old Nathan Honeycutt, one of my cousins. Nathan was a happy boy that day, playing with me, my brother, and the cats. After a great meal, everyone went outside to swim. Nathan, who hasn’t learned how to correctly swim yet, jumped in the pool. The adults were sitting in the chairs under the roof, listening to music, having drinks, and laughing. It was a joyous time. The hot tub was warm, so I decided to chill in there before I got out. I decided I wasn’t going to get back in the pool after getting in the hot tub, because I would have to leave this cozy spot and freeze to death.…

I recall the feeling of my eardrums popping, a quick stinging sensation, and then quickly grabbing my nose and blowing out as hard as I could to equalize the pressure in my ears. I was now sitting on the bottom of a 20 foot deep pool, minimal air left in my lungs. As I rested at the bottom of the pool, lungs beginning to burn, I was not nervous or worried about my situation. I loved the water, it is where I am the most comfortable. I had done this multiple times, swim as deep as possible, relax for a few seconds, and then slowly glide back up to the surface. However, this was the last time I would do this because the next day I left to join the Air Force. The point of my story is not to tell you about my hobby for diving, but of how I welcome uncomfortable and difficult situations, adapt to them, and then overcome them with ease. Chaos begins when you allow yourself to lose control of the situation at hand. Yet,…

First, we went to the office to sign all the waivers, which made me really nervous for my life. Since we had a long wait, we sat down with the other people who were in our group. I met an elderly man and his wife; they were very polite and friendly. It was their first time parasailing also. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it was time for us to board the boat. We had to walk across the street and down a long walkway to get to the dock. As we were boarding the boat I almost slipped and fell into the water.…
