Personal Narrative: A Career In Social Work
I am an innate leader with an empathetic heart. As someone currently pursuing a career in social work, I have found that my natural ability to connect with people will be the greatest skill I bring.
In my most recent job, I was in private security working in the field of executive protection and event security. During a routine shift my main task was to utilize my conflict de-escalation tactics. One of the skills I acquired working in this field was the art of verbal judo, or using one's words to prevent, de-escalate, or end an attempted assault. Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

There are many juveniles who enter the legal system and just get recycled, or never make it out. Some enter the system and actually make a turn around and are either successful in work or school, or they are a boon to spreading awareness to other juveniles about how they don’t want to end up being circulated through the juvenile justice system. Despite the problems being made to help juvenile stay on the straight and narrow there have been improvements on the juvenile justice system in the United States. Although other countries may not use our ways of dealing with juveniles, by using troubled teens help other troubled teens get on the right track we have drastically changed how our juvenile system.…

Walking into the locker room about to get ready to go to our last football game of the season. I could smell the sweaty equipment from the kids who never take their pads home. The Hempfield Spartans 7th grade team would be ending their season 0-7 if we didn’t win today. As I was changing into my pads my friend mike walked in the room. I said “you ready for tonight”. “Heck yeah” replied Mike.…

I have known Melody for over 10 years. I have watched her grow academically and professionally from a high school student in an International Baccalaureate Scholars program, to someone who is passionate about her career in the law field. As a peer, has been a source of motivation and an example of what hard work and commitment looks like. I remember when she first started working for Legal Aid of North Carolina soon after graduating from college. She started off as a volunteer and invested time with the company for about 3 months before being offered a position. Most graduates would have rather been applying to paid jobs versus making that sacrifice for a company post-graduation. Then, after about a year and a half working at Legal Aid NC as…

Before this shadowing experience, I knew that pursuing a career in medicine is something that I was interested in, but I never had a real experience to examine a typical doctor's life. After the first week of shadowing, I started getting a sense of what it is to be a doctor. Becoming a doctor is not something easy. Every time I went to the office, there was a big list of patients that doctor Eloy had to meet. He had to be careful about the way he acts and the way he talks with patients, nurses, and other doctor. Even though it seemed so hard at the beginning, I enjoyed this experience and I learned a lot from it. I learned that being a doctor requires more than going to medical school. Medical school is just the first step. I learned that a…

Disability support worker; what does mean? To someone who is unaware of the term, they may think that it is just adult babysitting. Aside from that being offensive, it is so much more than that. It is devoting your time to spend with a person and to make them feel like person. To one person, it may not seem much to some, but to the right person, it could mean the world. Having the opportunity to meet individuals and making them feel empowered meant the world to me, and the smile on their face for their success. Ever since I was in fourth grade, I have enjoyed helping kids and watching them learn new things and grow. The best feeling is helping children with something and watching their faces light up as they discover what they can do all by themselves. While in fourth and fifth grade, I was a part of the buddy program at my school which entailed spending every lunch in the special education classroom at my elementary school. A trait I possess is being sequential and that is useful for the career I want because it will help me with staying organized and grading papers. I am an analyzer, I like to know what is going on around me and love to know how things work. This is a trait that comes in handy with being an elementary school teacher.…
