Revolving with Electrons

Have you ever wondered exactly how the elements on the periodic table are organized, what the groups on the periodic table mean, and how electrons work in an atom, compound, and chemical bond? The way elements are organized on a periodic table has to do with the characteristics that they hold. There are groups, periods, compound formation and color coordination in a periodic table.

The periodic table is organized in many ways. As stated by Chem4kids.com, "Each element is placed in a specific location because of its atomic structure. The periodic table has rows (left to right) and columns (up and down). Each row and column has specific characteristics" ("Elements and

The horizontal rows are known as periods, organized by the number of atomic orbitals in an element and the elements are also organized by atomic number starting at one and ending at one-hundred and eighteen. The vertical columns are known as groups, organized together based on the number of valence electrons located in the outer orbital of atoms. Last, to add to the ease of organization, the periodic table also has eight groups organized by color depending on their chemical make-up.

Each of the groups in the periodic table has different characteristics. These eight groups are: Noble Gases, Alkali metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Lanthanide Series, Actinide Series, Halogens, Semimetals, Basic Metal and Nonmetals. As stated by Chemicalelements.com,

"The six noble gases are found in group 18 of the periodic table. All noble gases have the maximum number of electrons possible in their outer

The periodic table is composed of eighteen columns and seven horizontal rows, with two additional rows underneath. There is grand total of 112 elements in the periodic table, each of which is placed in a designated spot on the table and cannot be moved. Different areas on the table have elements that are made of different components. Elements that are in the same column are more similar than elements in the same horizontal row. Seventy five percent of the table is made up of metals, and a couple of the columns on the right of the table have gases. There are only two elements that are liquids- mercury and bromine. Column 1 contains the alkali metals, which suddenly combust when exposed to air or water. Columns 3-12 are the transition metals, which contain heavier atoms, which are more flexible in how they organize their electrons. Column 17 is made up of the more reactive gases- the halogens. The noble gases are in column 18. The electrons are the most significant part of an atom. When atoms don’t have the sufficient number of electrons they need in their outer level, they will do whatever they can to get the number they need. The number of protons an atom has is its atomic number. The atomic number plus the number of neutrons the atom has is the atom’s atomic weight.…

Dmitri Mendeleev created the periodic table on March 6, 1869 (almost 100 years, to the day, before my birthdayJ) based on the atomic weights of the elements. Many elements were missing then, but he left spaces for them because he thought one day they might be discovered. Now the periodic table is arranged by the element’s atomic number and many other trends from it can provide valuable information to scientists. When information is arranged in a certain order it is called periodicity. Your assignment is to create your own periodic table using periodicity and similar trends as found in the modern periodic table.…

Periodicity, generally related to the so call "invention" of the Periodic Table. In that table, Mendeleev arranges elements according to their molecular mass into rows and columns. And amazingly, those in the same columns have similar properties. However, at the time Mendeleev invented the table, there is a few elements. So he named "missing" elements (in other words, cells) in the table and predicted their properties... Periodicity, in terms of Chemistry is the properties of elements that, if you know where it is in the Periodic Table, you can actually "predict" its properties without actually trying to find them out yourself.…

Chemical periodicity is defined as the similarities of chemical elements that are close to each other in the periodic table. When elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, their physical and chemical properties recur periodically. For example, magnesium, calcium, and strontium are all hard, very reactive, silvery metals while neon, argon, and krypton are all unreactive colorless gases. This periodicity stems from the valence electronic configurations of the elements. This arrangement of elements in the order of increasing atomic number with the elements having similar properties placed in vertical columns is known as periodic table.…
