Perfect English Class
Last Thursday was definitely an interesting class whether for better or for worse. This class was definitely a wakeup call for me as to understanding the students in the class. Since it was the last class, we agreed on having “best and worst moment” during the second half of the class with the idea of ending the class on a nice note. The theme of the class for the day was to discuss on the perception of what is meant by a perfect English. The class started off with the right momentum, everybody was engaged and involved in the discussion. Interns and facilitators knew that the conclusion to the discussion was to reach a consensus with students that there is no such thing as a perfect English and at the end, what mattered was a perfect grammar. Perhaps it was because we were less prepared in determining the scope of the discussion, we ended up slightly touching on the subject of “perfect English” and diverted off course to racism.

Honestly, there were a lot of pros and cons when the situation took place the way it did. One of the pros would definitely be that I was given a wakeup call as to how, many of the students, perceived the issue of racism. If political correctness was stripped out from the conversation, I could definitely see many of the students actually identifying with subtle forms of racism. The issues

If I were to be honest, it really became a show about a particular student. Though I felt regretful that this student had such standings, I could not help but feel sorry, in a conflicting way, because obviously, everyone (at least facilitator, coordinator and interns) were in opposition with his views and it became an “us against him” situation. I felt that it was unprofessional on our side for the purpose of this course is to educate. The class ended definitely with a bittersweet feeling. Nevertheless, it will be a good lesson for future

Blue made sure to see that the students were receiving positive feedback. When each of the students entered the room, they retrieved their binders and all sat down quietly. Each of the students were very respectful to each other in that whenever someone raised their hand to speak, they were the only ones who spoke. There was no character development program or a posted set of rules displayed in her classroom. In her classroom she did the majority of the talking while the students listened and answered her questions. In the high school classroom, there was quite a bit of talking and disruption among the students in the beginning. There were many students who were up and walking around while he was discussing the homework. There was no character development in the classroom. Mr. G didn’t seem tell really be listening to his students, one student had to repeat his question three times. Each teacher provided a way to show respect and understanding to their students, and then the other showed a class room that didn’t have much respect for each…

Spike Lee once said, just because you live in the same city, doesn’t mean you will have the same experiences. Everyone grows up in different households and learn the lessons about life; some lessons that are moral lessons, some are not. The lesson that I have learned is that you should always treat others the way you want to be treated. This class has helped me reflect on my own life and made me realize that racism steal goes on today. People’s mindset are stuck on the past and not embracing the present of progression.…

Although Mantsios does not focus on the Horatio Alger myth as does Harlon Dalton, both authors concern themselves with seeing beyond the myths of success to underlying realities. After my second week in college, I’m finding that high school has not taught me as much about college English as I thought it would. When I took the English placement test upon enter at the College of the Redwoods, I thought I did fairly well. I had not been in high school for thirty years so when I received the test results, spoke with an academic advisor, and learned that I would need to take English 150: Pre-collegiate Reading and Writing class I thought that meant I had retained some shred of knowledge from high school. Now I’m finding that high school hasn’t even prepared me for a remedial class!…

The diversity in the United States has helped me to better understand and relate to others in ways that I may not have in the past. I have learned much from this class and about myself that there is still discrimination and prejudice in the United States. I have learned that I need to take the time and to get to know a person before I make any judgments against them. There are so many different kinds of people in the United States with the different backgrounds. We do not need to discriminate against anyone until we can look at ourselves first to make sure we are clean. We need to look beyond the core of their skin and what they are wearing, and the way they talk. Since this class I have stepped back and looked around to see how people act with each other some get along just fine then you have the few that you can tell are uncomfortable. I have learned that everyone needs to be treated as equals it does not matter what your age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability. We just need to all get along and to educate others.…

My first question to him was, “Have you seen racism in our school? And his response was, “No i have never seen racism in this school or any school I worked at, but I have seen a lot of racism growing up and my school”. I agree with that because I have heard many stories from my parents and grandparents about how their use to be a black school only and a white school only. No blacks or whites were allowed to be seen together. This led to my next question, “How often was the situation”, as he responded, “No it was never often, it was more of an isolation problem”. This led to my next question about the Oklahoma chant, “What’s your opinion on the chant from the student at Oklahoma Unsurvey?” with his response “ It was very tacky on the behavior of the frat house, and the student was wrong for what he said, but the present and school board handled the problem very well. Which I think we all can agree that the present handle it well, as I began to end my interview with my last question, “ How do you think we can change the view on racism as we get older and time change?” How do you think we can change the view on racism as we get older and time change?” And he responded, “ we would never be able to change generation of racism until we get them to understand the true meaning of racism we would never be able to change generation of racism until we hit it so we get them to understand the true meaning of racism, remember the Titans is a great movie that explains racism because it explains how you can take two races and come together, remember the titans is a great example of racism because it explains how two races come together and create a powerful football team even though the town didn't like it”, but there are many ways we can prevent racism from happening.…

Racism is the hardest one to discuss but I am doing my best to help student to discuss. Also I want to mention something , I want to change their idea about how they can discuss this kind of topic. For example, if you are a white american and you are not racist so I do not have to discuss or talk about any thing that some white people has done in their history. Even though he or she are not racist , he or she belongs to this part. By knowing how to interact with people and learning the history and discussing that in a good why without avoiding talking about it that is a tool that I want to see them using it after they pass this course.…

The cultural difference between us made it hard for other students to understand what we were during. Students of color would be upset with me for talking with the white students and the white students would also be upset with them for associating with me. Just like half-century ago black people had problems when the right to vote in the South was the almost exclusive domain of white people (Kornacki, 2011). Black people would be intimidated by white people if…

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I trudge up two flights of stairs with the wind whipping at my face as my fingers feverishly click out the final text message I need to send before class starts. I walk into the warm, musty computer lab and sit at my usual spot with the view of the library through the tree limbs. I am always sure to come to English class because I know of my terrible history in this subject area. I have always struggled with English and before this semester had assumed that the college level class would be the death of me. As I read over the syllabus for this class it states that we will learn to understand writing assignments as a series of tasks and develop flexible strategies for generating, revising, editing, and proof-reading the assigned papers. I shuddered at the sheer thought of having to write five papers. Narrative, Evaluation, Profile, Position. These words might as well have been written in another language because I had no idea how to differentiate between them. Despite my fears, I believe this semester’s English 101 course has truly helped me develop my writing skills and advance to a more capable writer.…

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

I was able to engage with my friends and belong. This activity that we did in my elementary school opened my eyes to discrimination and to paraphrase Martin Luther King it helped me: “not to judge by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” I come from a family with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds so I never really felt different or left out until that morning at school. I am so grateful for being able to experience discrimination because I learned that it’s never ok to make someone feel less than a person based on what they wear, or what they look like, and especially not their color of their skin. This activity gave me a different outlook in life and although it will never compare to what happened during the civil rights movement; I can conclude that people who discriminate are small minded and are often intimidated by a certain group they discriminate…
