Perceptual Map Explanations
Perceptual Map explanation

In my Perceptual Map construction, I chose Fast acting/Slow release for the horizontal axis, and
General pain relief/Specific pain relief for my vertical axis. Evaluation and placement of the various types of pain relievers is solely based on information given to the consumer by the packaging and description given. Explanations are as follows and in no particular order:
Tylenol Extra Strength- I felt this placement was fairly straight forward with the information given. Key descriptors that jumped out at me were Extra Strength and Rapid Release. It was placed #1 for fast acting/ general pain relief. A key factor in my decision to place this medication
#1 was the dosage strength(500mg), which separated itself from

I placed it higher than other general pain relievers such as Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin, etc., but with lack of dosage information I could not place it as high as Tylenol Extra Strength on the pain relief axis. Also, I could not notice any definitive information that would tell me whether this medication was fast acting or slow acting so it was placed in a neutral area along that axis.
Aleve- This medication was placed on the general pain relief axis, and due to dosage strength of 220mg, was placed below Vanquish. There is also a general “pain reliever/fever reducer” caption, and no specific pain this medication targets. Also, there is no mention of how fast or slow this medication takes to provide relief, so it was neutral on that axis. (group of aleve,
Nuprin, Advil, Motrin, and bayer are all meant to be seen as neutral on the fast acting/slow release axis and due to overlapping, were placed in positions seen along that specific axis.)
Nuprin- This medication was placed below Aleve on the general pain relief axis due to the dosage strength of 200mg/capsule being slightly lower. Again, no mention of time of

Motrin- Placed alongside Nuprin and Advil on the general pain relief scale due to dosage strength 200mg. No mention of whether the medication is fast acting or a slow release capsule.
Observations: It seems Nuprin, Advil, and Motrin have no real advantage against the other when competing for consumer business. All are targeting the same group of potential customers, and it seems decisions made by customers in this area would be on brand experience and trust more than anything.
Bayer chewable- This medication was placed on the general pain relief axis but below all others in this category. the main reason is its 81mg dose. There is no real indication of time of release.
This medication does differentiate itself from others by being a chewable tablet, which has some appeal to specific consumers.

Excedrin- This medication specifically stated the ailment to be targeted, hence its placement on the specific pain relief axis. No mention of time of release is holding this medication back from being at the top of its specific market. Also, no dosing or strength mentioned on box.
Anacin- This medication is placed on the fast acting axis due to the specific labeling “Fast

It functions by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1, which releases prostaglandins that cause pain as a response to injury. In a study conducted by Moore et al., 160 patients were subject to various topical NSAIDS to determine their effectiveness. Out of the six drugs tested, the results indicated that felbinac, ibuprofen, and piroxicam were the most useful in relieving pain due to acute and chronic conditions.3…

The cat Jasper is a male cat that was given an over-the-counter analgesic which had caused him to keep getting sicker. He is one years old and weighs seven pounds, five ounces. His symptoms included vomiting and having diarrhea for several days. His lab tests showed a metabolic acidosis meaning there was too much acid in his body fluid. This meant Jasper could have been given acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen. To identify what analgesic Jasper was given we took samples of the different analgesics and crushed them. We used a melting point apparatus to find out what the melting point was and matched it with acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen. Then we used the Infrared Spectroscopy to determine the function group of the molecules to help us identify which analgesic was used. Between the symptoms, melting point, and results of the infrared spectroscopy we were able to identify what analgesic Jasper ingested.…

The concepts of this theory are the balance between analgesia and side effects, pain, and side effects themselves. Opioid analgesics often have very unpleasant side effects, so the end result is often patients taking less medication than they actually need, which results in pain not being effectively relieved. The combination of potent analgesics, pharmacological and non-pharmacological adjuvants can allow for the pain relief needed and also help minimize or eliminate unwanted side effects. Nurses can work with the patient to educate them on the side effects of potent medication and help them set realistic goals. This will entail working with both the patient and physician to achieve the results desired.…

Naproxen sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID, possesses analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. Naproxen sodium was added to Jeff’s plan of care to treat his chronic back pain. NSAIDs are absorbed through the GI tract and decreases pain by reversibly blocking cyclooxygenase which inhibits the formation of prostaglandins. Naproxen sodium has an onset of 30 minutes and duration of approximately seven hours (Sutton, 1996). Jeff should be educated to avoid drinking alcohol and taking aspirin while on this medication as well as to avoid taking other meds such as ibuprofen or other meds similar to naproxen which could cause an overdose. Medications that Jeff is currently taking that could cause a drug interaction…

Vicodin is prescription medication that is used to treat moderate to severe pain in adults. The two main ingredients in Vicodin are Hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is considered to be a pain reliever that acts similarly to codine and is effective at decreasing the pain as well as relieving cough, however its can also cause drowsiness, mood changes, and metal “clouding”. Because of this reason the it can only be used when combined with another drug and not alone, as far as in the United States. Therefore its combined with acetaminophen, which is also a pain reliever along with a fever reducer. The combination of these two drugs helps improve acetaminophen’s effectiveness at relieving pain as well as limiting the potential abuse of Hydrocodone. The maximum dose of Vicodin is usually controlled by the amount of acetaminophen that it contains.…

Ketorolac is a member of the pyrrolo-pyrrole family of NSAIDs and has been shown to exhibit analgesic activity in animal models; although the exact mechanism of action of all NSAIDs is not completely understood the action of ketorolac, as with other NSAIDs, is believed to be related to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis (Keltman, 2010). The peak analgesic effect of oral ketorolac is within 2 to 3 hours and bioavailability does not vary significantly between oral, IM and IV (Keltman, 2010). The primary…
