She never wanted a job, because she thought her art career was going to bloom out of nowhere. It seemed like she would spend money on art supplies when her kids were hungry, wearing dirty clothing, or being very cold. She thought her artwork made the house better for everyone, and would ‘perk’ it up. “Since Mom had more paintings than we had wall space, Dad nailed long shelf brackets to the wall, and she hung one picture in front of another until they were three or four deep. Then she’d rotate the paintings. “Just a little redecorating to perk the place up,” she’d say. But I believed she thought of her paintings as children and wanted them to feel that they were all being treated equally.”(Walls 154) Instead of fixing the house, instead of buying better clothes or better beds for her children, she’s buying art supplies to paint pictures so her artwork can ‘perk the place up’. It’s not helping in the least. Her postive thinking about her painting’s, about having to perk the place up doesn’t help her or her children at…

Throughout his life he had many jobs that led him to being an inventor. His first job was an apprentice in a machine shop; there he had repaired railroad equipment such as track, lights, bridges, and anything else that goes with the railroad. His second job was a fireman, a job he had gained from the Apprentice. Here, he was the fireman of D&S Railroads in Missouri, which led him into his next job. In 1878, he became an engineer on a British steamer known as Ironsides. He was then promoted to the chief engineer. This lead into the start of a business he and his brother Lyates ran. It was called the Woods Railway Telegraph Co. It simply made electrical telephone and telegraph equipment for the railroad industry.…

Aside from Benjamin Franklin, Oliver Evans could perhaps be considered as one of the most prolific inventors in American history. His design would be used in locomotives that would become crucial to both the American and global Industrial Revolutions.…

For me, the show still feels a bit like a platform for ABC to showcase their stars. This episode featured Josh Groban, Jay Leno, Laurence Fishburne, and Lea Thompson, which is a lot of stars for thirty minutes. However, there is promising upward trend from the pilot to this episode. Here is hoping that it will continue to improve and…

He is an American inventor best known for his invention of the Gatling gun. His father worked on machines to sow cotton and thin out cotton plants on the plantation (britannica.com). He worked with his father to perfect the machines on the farm at an early age. At age 15 he started to work at the county clerk’s office, and by the time he turned 19 he left the county clerk’s office to teach school and become a merchant (YourDictionary.com). At the age of 21 he perfected a practical screw propeller for steamboats, only to find that a patent had been granted to John Ericsson for a similar invention a few months earlier (britannica.com). At the age of 22 he was able to successfully patent a rice planter, which was the beginning of his notoriety. He later moved to St Louis, Missouri at the age of 26, where he worked in a dry goods store and manufactured seed planters (britannica.com). He adapted the current cotton sowing machine and made it work to sow rice, wheat, and other grains. He was creative and had talent for arts; that means, somehow, he had a sensitive side. Because of his mess up life, he had no opportunity, no encouragement to develop his skills for art. Malcolm Gladwell, the author of the book Outliers, has a theory that to achieve excellence people have to work hard on their own goal, being precise, they have to work 10,000 hours on it. But people, who do not have a healthy environment or do not have someone to give incentive, would never work those hours. It is much easier and common to give up on the goal or talent. Jim Williams could notice that Danny was an artist. “Of course, his talent wasn’t developed. He didn’t have the patience,” said Williams (247). It would be too much to say that Danny would be a genius artist, but maybe if he had lived in another place other than Savannah, he could have, at least, developed his sensitive…

Reality television has become one of the most common forms of entertainment in the American household since the early 2000’s. From “The Bachelor” to “Jersey Shore”, no plot seems too racy or inappropriate for audiences of all ages. Recently, however, TLC aired their newest reality TV show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” that is thought to be one of the most controversial reality TV series of all time. The show encompasses the lives of a small-town, southern Georgian family who live a frugal lifestyle, and demonstrate the self proclaimed stereotype of rednecks. Fascinatingly, the series captures the quirky attitude of seven-year-old Alana Thompson, and her mother, June Shannon. Although the series has produced high ratings in its first season, (tying the ratings for the Democratic National Convention in the 18-49 demographic) critics cannot help but comment on the obscurity of this new reality TV show.…

The most famous businessman in the world, Andrew Carnegie, actually grew up with another family in one half of an attic, and him and his parents in another half. This attic was located above his father’s workplace in Dunfermline, Scotland. At the age of eight, he started his education in a one-room school packed with around 150 students. Driven by the Irish potato famine, his family left for the United states in 1848, searching for a better and safer life. In order to make ends meet his family needed $7.50 a week, so Carnegie took a job at a local textile mill setting, removing bobbins as they filled with spun yarn. At the age of sixteen, he worked as a telegraph operator. He became locally famous for being able to decode Morse code messages…
