Paul Roberts How To Say Nothing In 500 Words Summary
In Writedge, the minimum word limit is 325 words. But 325 words are barely enough to produce a content-rich article that is the standard in Writedge. For newbies like me, it would be difficult to be able to produce a 500-word article without doing some “little” cheating. That “little” cheating is making the content seem long but in reality, it lacks content. It often leads to our articles being rejected because it is weak in content.

I’ve come across an article titled, “How to say Nothing in 500 Words”[1] by Paul Roberts. It is an essay giving advice about writing. It tells us things that we should know about being a good writer. His essay centers on college composition but it can also be applied when writing an article for Info Barrel. I‘ve taken his advice.

It is not because of the problem to fill in the 500 words. Excessive timidity means using expressions such as “in my opinion”, “in my point of view” among others. I admit that I use these expressions and I do it because I’m a student and feel that my opinion is somewhat inexperienced. I learned from Paul Roberts that using these expressions too often can be dangerous. Yes, I am inexperienced but I don’t have to write about it throughout the article. You can put it in once or twice and that is enough. If you want to call a fool a fool then do so.If you put too much of those expressions, how will you convince the readers to believe in you if you flaunt your incompetence.

Beware of Pat Expressions

I’m not an expert in this area because even I cannot distinguish the difference. All I can explain is that “pat expressions” are tags such as “all things being equal”, “to the ends of the earth” and “over my dead body” are among the expressions. They are clichés and should be used when we can’t think anymore. Often we use these expressions naturally when we write so we should familiarize ourselves with such expressions to avoid them.

Within this passage certain aspects of Sen. Paul’s ideology, can be compared to his father’s ideology. Sen. Paul believes that government efforts in combatting economically impoverished areas, should be done so through the promotion of laissez faire economics. His proposed “economic freedom zones”, would lead to deregulation within economic matters in these zones. Sen. Paul’s advocation for free-market economics, is the second aspect that aligns with Ron Paul’s libertarian ideology.…

The Holy One, Word of God, Emmanuel, and Son of God, these names describe one man: Jesus Christ. No other person in the history of the world is more well known or respected. The man born of a virgin and raised by a carpenter. He taught kindness and compassion while driving out hate and corruption, and his own people, the Jews, and the Romans put him to death for preaching the good news. Jesus’ impact on the world is unparalleled. Wars were fought in his name. The church, his lasting gift, influenced life for almost two-thousand years in Europe. The modern world is truly shaped by this man. One may wonder who, if anyone, can match this man in any manner. While no mortal is even on the same level as Jesus, similarities can still be drawn.…

In high school, students would try to impress their teacher with unnecessary complex words and sentences, which could sometimes take away the message that they were trying to convey. Our mentality was that the bigger and the more complex the words are, the better. It was not so when I got to WRI 1050. I soon learned that using big words and complex sentences meant nothing if the essay lacked a strong content.…

Students must provide responses in essay form to each of these questions or “statements of competence (always starting with 1.1). The recommended word count for each essay is 200 words. Students do not need to worry if they exceed this word count or if they go under it by a few words on a few questions. It is important that a student does not “fixate” on word counts, but, rather that he or she focuses on the quality of their responses. Realistically, essays should not fall under the recommended word count too often or by too much when students conduct thorough research and provide satisfactory evidence of competence.…

I really enjoyed reading "How to Say Nothing in 500 Words," I thought it was an easy read. Paul Roberts did an extremely great job at catching the readers attention and keeping it. He used humor as his tone of voice which was very unique in an article like this. He found a funny way to teach writers the do's and don't of writing. One part of the content that stood out to me was to avoid the obvious content. When required to pick a side and persuade the reader, is to start out by writing down all the examples of evidence to side with your opinion. After that, cross those out and think of completely different arguments that are not the cliche and redundant. Think from a different perspective and find unique supporting details and examples that…
