Participative Leadership In Nursing
Participative leadership fosters comradery between employees and allows for the formation of friendships between coworkers. This is very important, especially in nursing since so many nurses participate in a “mobbing” mentality where often more experienced and qualified nurses seem to display more aggressive behavior towards their peers. ( Bortoluzzi,G.,Caporale,L. & Palese A., 2014) Employees that want to work with one another everyday will be more motivated to complete tasks and work as a team. Participative management is great for staff morale. Being given a voice empowers employees to feel more of a sense of liability for the success of the company. This makes them more willing to take a more active role in participating, especially when they know that they can help make changes in the workplace. Another strength of this leadership style is creativity. By opening up the discussion, instead of only having one or two solutions, a variety of solutions are available for leadership to choose from .

Constant use of participative management can potentially cause rifts among the team. An additional weakness of participative and other types of people oriented leadership styles is the lack of task completion in a timely fashion. Often relationship based leaders focus so much on building the team and establishing the effective working relationships that the tasks and goals may not be completed by the deadline. An additional weakness is that some staff members who do not want extra responsibility or who are intimidated by taking on projects feel overwhelmed .     I had the chance to observe and learn what a nurse leader does on a daily base on a busy cardiovascular surgical step-down floor.
