Strengths
Fresh baked bread everyday
Majority of their bakeries offer free WIFI
It is a healthier option than fast food places.
Merged together Au Bon Pain and St. Louis Bread Company.
Bread dough’s are made offsite at the company 17 manufacturing plants.
Offers Panera kids menu.
Removed trans fats from its menu.

Weaknesses
The prices are higher than many fast food restaurants.
They have a very weak dinner menu.
Organic and high quality food=high prices
Small number of location compared to competitors.
No big markets in NYC, Atlantic City, and DC.

Weaknesses Panera is known for their organic and high quality of the food, this results in high prices for their products. Even though the food is fresh can the company afford to sell their products at a high price in this economy? It is considered a high-end fast food restaurant so if people are looking to get food quick at a cheap price, Panrea is not the place. Panera is open around dinnertime, but does not offer many substantial food choices for this time of the day. It seems like the company is satisfied with the soup and salad meal combo and not focusing on the variety of food. As a result they do not get a lot of customers at this hour and loose money having employees work this shifts. (Schermerhorn, 2010) There are over 12,000 McDonalds in the United States, and If there is 1,180 Panera’s in the United States then that means that there are about ten McDonalds for every one Panera. That is a huge margin in the line of competition and Panera less likely to receive business. They also have strong other competitors that do not charge as much money fro their products such as Chipotle Mexican Grille and Starbucks. (www.nationmaster.com) The locations for some Panera stores are not in some main city locations. They do not have any stores in New York City, Atlantic City, and Washington DC.     From reading the case I found that Panera Bread uses the broad differentiation strategy. Panera bread has been able to create value to their food that is not easily matched or cheaply copied by rivals. Panera Bread’s breads, bagels, and muffins are made fresh daily. The professionally trained bakers spend about 48 hours making the dough, which is then distributed on a 220 degree temperature controlled truck operated by Panera personnel to ensure optimal freshness (C-136). Also, the trucks only travel 300 miles to insure the dough is fresh when arriving at their location.
