Through the Pumped For Post Secondary mentorship program, I have been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto for 2 years. I have attended two Pumped For Post Secondary mentorship programs, one located at George Brown College and the other at the University of Toronto, St. George campus. These programs allowed me to learn multiple skills and available options for a student entering post-secondary education. I have gained through the presentations and mentors of Big Brothers and Big Sisters the ability to budget, write a decent resume, properly conduct an interview and stress management. I was encouraged to speak with others and now am able to confidently speak my mind and interact with others more easily than before. This is a massive step from me, because I am a shy person and would get scared of new people as they were strangers to me. Thanks to this program I can now talk to people without the fear of messing up.…
I think Marist is a good match for me because Marist offers many classes that will further expand my knowledge. Moreover, when I visited the Marist campus I fell in love with the feel of the campus and the atmosphere. Even though I grew up close to the campus it still feels like I'm away from home.…
Taking part in the magnet program called STEM, it meant taking more vigorous academic courses that consisted of pre-ap and AP classes. I have had to work harder to keep my grades up as well as study more often. By taking harder classes, it has prepared me for college and taught me what hard work is. It has given me a new outlook on life and has opened me up to different career paths.Throughout highschool I have also been apart of JROTC program. The JROTC program is organization that is lead by the students which gives us the independence to make decisions and has taught me how to become a leader and citizen. It has motivated me to set goals and accomplish them. I was given more responsibilities and have had to learn to have more patience for others and be a role model to them.…
Throughout my placement on Redbrook ward, i have had the opportunity to be involved and take part in MDT meetings. By producing the following table, i was able to understand why having MDT meetings are important, and the importance they have on effective patient care.…
The community that I am most close to is my school community. Most of us share a common religion and unique abilities to serve others. When I first joined the St. Francis DeSales community I did not know what to expect. Going from a public school to a private catholic school was a big step for me. When I entered St. Francis DeSales for the first time, I was welcomed with open arms and hearts. I was surprised how well everybody knew each other and came from different backgrounds. I was joining a community of friendship and common beliefs. Now being a senior, I am proud to say that the community at DeSales is strong and friendly towards others. We are there for each other and help each other out during the tough times. When someone is…
Super size me is a documentary by Independent film director Morgan Spurlock. The gist of the film is to show the viewers how eating fast food specifically mcdonald's is bad for you. Spurlock goes on a 30 day mcdonald's diet to show how it's a leading cause of obesity in this country, each time he goes to mcdonalds and is offered a super size he has to accept the offer hence the name of the documentary. By the end of the documentary he gained 25 pounds and a lot of health problems. So this is the second time i’ve watched this documentary and the first time i watched it i was like oh man he had a lot of problems throughout the experiment, but when i was assigned to do a summary and leave my opinion to see if it was a legit experiment i was left…
Lets face it, when we hear the words “community service”, we automatically think it’s going to be torcher, hard labor or something scary. At least, that’s what I thought when my professors first told me I had to do 30 hours of community service. I thought it was going to be impossible for me to do 30 hours along with commuting back and forth to school; transportation was already an issue for me. At this time, my professor was handing out a long list of possible places we would have to contact for community service; I was terrified. Then, Jennifer Troxell came in to explain what P.A.I.R.S. was. It was like music to my ears. Partnerships and Initiatives with Returning Students (P.A.I.R.S) is a form of community service; mentoring program, where upper classmen at Bloomfield College are to mentor freshmen; mentees. Jennifer explained that we were to choose a freshman, develop a friendship, introduce the mentee to the campus; staff, peers, community, answer all the questions that the mentee have about college, learn from each other, develop a sense of social responsibility and develop time management skills. Since I am a commuter, I believe P.A.I.R.S would obviously be the most convenient for me.…
Altogether, being in the Youth Volunteer Corps group has allowed me to mature by seeing how much poverty is around and making me realize how grateful I should be. I have met new people and have become friends with people I thought I would never talk to. It has showed me how much fun you can have if you keep an open mind. The experiences I have gained will help me in the future as I move away from home and deal with diverse personalities and people from all walks of life. I…
Reflection allows an individual to identify the reasons or purpose of understanding the outcome of a particular situation in depth in term of emotions on thought and feeling on the topic area. In addition, Reflection is something that we do implicitly as part of being human, underpinning our identities through a process of negotiation between our sense of self and our experiences of others (Demetriou, 2000, p.210). Therefore, I have implemented this quote in my professional and personal goals I wanted and have achieved thought-out the process of the module. I have made continues effort in building my confidence in situations that I have felt uncomfortable in.…
On May 17, 9th through 12th grade students in My Mental Health Matters (MMHM), a new club at State High, presented May’s Straight Talk session. MMHM is a student-formed club that aims to erase the stigma attached to issues surround mental health. Under the guidance of high school counselors Patty Devecka and Suzanne Lyke, Jana Marie Foundation’s President Marisa Vicere, and State High alumnus Shawn Bainbridge, members strive to bring awareness to common feelings of doubt or helplessness and most importantly, to let students know that they are never alone in the State High halls. Their Straight Talk presentation covered the importance of mental health awareness from a student perspective. The students responsible for forming MMHM were moved by troubling results from the most recent Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS), which reflected alarmingly high rates of depression and suicidal ideation. They identified that the importance of physical health receives a great deal of attention, but mental health is often neglected. The…

Not only did this program improve my capabilities as a student, but also as a human being. I would have never found a proper label for myself. A kid who is serious about their future, able to obtain passing grades, and unique in their own way; I am an AVID student. This identity made me proud, and encouraged me keep pushing through the hurdles of my academic…

This paper is going to identify an occurrence of invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization that I’ve experienced. Invidious comparison happens each and every day to practically everyone in the world. It is human nature to compare themselves to others,…
I found that the strengths of this program are the supportive staff, and the skills these teens walk with. As a previous student in the P.A.C.E. program I have first hand experience with the elements and atmosphere within. The program is developed to promote success in all aspects of the teen’s life. Teachers that take the time to know each student and there needs, teach the core curriculum and self-care classes. Not to say that any one is given a free ride but compassion is key with this program. The students not only have time to bond with their children but they learn…
