JUSTIFY 9IN DETAIL) WHY THIS HAZARD CARRIES ACCEPTABLE RISK (M2) AND PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR REDUCING RISK EVEN IT WAS ACCEPTABLE RISK (D1)
May fall into pond
Drowning
7 The reason why I give this occurrence a 7 is because it is not major but it is not unlikely for a child to fall into the pond.
4 The reason why I have chosen this number for the occurrence is because it is unlikely for a teacher to dismiss a child without going with them. This may lead to them falling into the pond and causing a serious accident. “Risk is the chance, high or low, that someone will be harmed by a hazard” (Stretch and Whitehouse, 2010, p88)
Yes
Not acceptable because the child should not be left alone and should be maintained at all times to prevent this. To prevent this from happening all staff should prevent it all staff should watch all children and have the correct amount of staff depending on the children. The reason why it is not at its highest risk is because all teachers who are taking the children to the park would be aware of the pond and tell the children not to enter the pond or walk around the pond for safety reasons. No children should be around the pond to prevent this from happening. It is more likely to happen because some children may wonder off and may fall into the pond and an accident. “The physical environment includes everything that is around you – objects, people, pets the building, the air and the temperature” (Stretch and Whitehouse, 2010, p89) All staff and teachers must be aware of the environment that they are taking the children in and what’s around them as well as the children to prevent any hazards.

It is important you have a balanced approach towards risk assessments. You must always make sure that children are not at any risk but sometimes you may give them the freedom to do something knowing they won’t hurt their self but will learn from it. For example if a child was walking along a balancing beam that wasn’t very high with a soft surface underneath then they wouldn’t be at risk of any danger, they may fall but it wouldn’t cause any injury. When children are doing a new activity or using a new area it can create a dilemma between the duty of care and the children rights. As a practitioner I should always do risk assessments on the activities and the environment. There is a mix of adult led and children led activities throughout the nursery. Children need to explore their own levels of risk-taking but in safe environments. If we try to over protect children and prevent them from taking risks they will seek their own risk-taking when adults are not around. The EYFS states that we need to conduct a risk assessment and review it regularly, the guidance on play includes the advice 'through play, in a secure but challenging environment with effective adult support, children can take risks and make mistakes'…

It is important that a balanced approach is taken in risk taking so that the children aren’t over protected. The children should be allowed to safely explore and make decisions about risks with the guidance of the staff within the setting. Children need to learn how to control risks for themselves, by learning what the safe boundaries are, by the staff showing the children how to recognise risks and dangers in the safest way possible.…

In deciding whether a reasonable person would have taken precautions the following factors are to be considered: What is the probability that harm will be suffered if precautions are not taken; what is the seriousness of the harm; what is the burden of taking the precautions (how substantial is the burden compared to the risk of harm); What is the social utility of the activity generating the risk. These are the questions presented by section 9 of the Act.…
