In 1962, Sam Walton from Roger, Arkansas came up with the idea of opening a store that was different from the others. He decided to open up a store by the name of Wal-Mart. In the same year of 1962, the first Target store was also opened. The Target store was opened in the Minneapolis suburb of Roseville, Minn. by Dayton Hudson. The focus of Target was to have convenient shopping along with competitive discounted prices. Today Target is the second largest general merchandise retailer in America. Target.com is ranked as the most visited website for retail.
Wal-Mart organizational structure is divisional. Geographic structure, market structure, and product structure are the three types of structures that falls under the divisional structure. Market structure is the category that Wal-Mart falls under. In the market structure, groups function by the type of customer. This way each division contains the function needed to service specific segments of the market (p, George, Jones).
The way that an organization arranges jobs and people so that goals can be met and jobs can be executed is called organizational structure. Wal-Mart is divided into a three product divisional structure. These three are Wal-Mart stores, International stores, and Sam’s Club. Wal-Mart has three beliefs that it is built on. These beliefs include respecting other individuals, great customer service, and striving for excellence. Customer satisfaction is also what Target strives for. The objectives of Target are to make themselves the preferred destination for shopping by giving their guests innovation, vale, and an outstanding experience. (Target, 2010)
Target and Wal-Mart organizational structures are both vertical. Due to the fact that Target is expanding globally, it is growing more horizontal. Wal-Mart focus their marketing on the lower class while Target gets the middle

    The first component of Wal-Mart is business commerce. Business commerce is when Wal-Mart exchange good and services with other businesses. For example, Wal-Mart has a hair salon service; I love to get my hair done every other week. Also, many Wal-Marts provide banking services and some fast food services. Wal-Mart has stock trades also. Another main component of Wal-Mart is business occupation. Business occupation is the acquired set of specialized skills and abilities that allows Wal-Mart to create valuable goods and services. When my husband started at Wal-Mart he had to undergo several trainings to ensure that he understands the business and also that he provides customers with excellent services. Wal-Mart provides thorough training to its employees so that they can keep the customers coming back. Customers always value great customer service. Business organization is the system of task and authority relationship which coordinates and controls the interactions between people so that they work toward a common goal. Wal-Mart’s common goal is to provide low prices. They try to provide lower prices than their competitors. They are about saving their customers money. They have reduced the costs of their retail and other products in the store. There are many Wal-Marts around the world and they provide the same services in all of them.     In this case study Roger Cahill has been acting as the head of mobile division for less than a year. Currently he is struggling as he faces great difficulties adapting BoldFlash to a changing marketplace. The problem really started a year ago when Mr. Jim Harrison appointed the young Roger Cahill to a VP position. Although Roger has led a research project in his previous work, he is only 24 years old and inexperienced to manage a company at VP level. Positions at those levels require years of strategic leadership and management skills. Nevertheless in the last 12 months, the company focused primarily on the redundant production of customized chips without further research or product development in new and upcoming areas like the storage device. This negligence from both product development and marketing is a huge loss to the company as they missed out on the opportunity to launch new product line; therefore missed the opportunity to penetrate the potential market. Now the company has old products not priced competitively and struggling to penetrate the marketshare.
