In 1962, Sam Walton from Roger, Arkansas came up with the idea of opening a store that was different from the others. He decided to open up a store by the name of Wal-Mart. In the same year of 1962, the first Target store was also opened. The Target store was opened in the Minneapolis suburb of Roseville, Minn. by Dayton Hudson. The focus of Target was to have convenient shopping along with competitive discounted prices. Today Target is the second largest general merchandise retailer in America. Target.com is ranked as the most visited website for retail. Wal-Mart organizational structure is divisional. Geographic structure, market structure, and product structure are the three types of structures that falls under the divisional structure. Market structure is the category that Wal-Mart falls under. In the market structure, groups function by the type of customer. This way each division contains the function needed to service specific segments of the market (p, George, Jones). The way that an organization arranges jobs and people so that goals can be met and jobs can be executed is called organizational structure. Wal-Mart is divided into a three product divisional structure. These three are Wal-Mart stores, International stores, and Sam’s Club. Wal-Mart has three beliefs that it is built on. These beliefs include respecting other individuals, great customer service, and striving for excellence. Customer satisfaction is also what Target strives for. The objectives of Target are to make themselves the preferred destination for shopping by giving their guests innovation, vale, and an outstanding experience. (Target, 2010) Target and Wal-Mart organizational structures are both vertical. Due to the fact that Target is expanding globally, it is growing more horizontal. Wal-Mart focus their marketing on the lower class while Target gets the middle class.
