Table of Contents
The following information is meant as a guide/table of contents to the rest of this module on essay organization. On this page, you will see the basic components of an essay with a brief description of each one. You will also find the page numbers that correspond to this component. You will find exercises for each component on the pages listed. Through the process of completing this module, you will work through the steps of composing your own essay, which include writing an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Furthermore, you will check your work with several exercises that focus on the coherence of the overall essay. Component Page Numbers 3-16

Introduction to Basic Essay Structure: Get a holistic view of the basic essay. Introduction: Learn some techniques for writing introductions. Body Paragraphs: Learn the basic structure for a body paragraph. Thesis: See the separate module on thesis statements for help on how to write a thesis for your paper.

Conclusion: Learn some techniques for writing conclusions. Overall Coherence: Learn techniques for testing the overall coherence of your essay.

Introduction to Basic Essay Structure: A Holistic View
What is an essay? Essays take many different forms depending on the purpose and audience for which they are written. For example, an essay in the sciences may look different than an essay in the humanities. The audiences in these two distinct fields may have different expectations, and thus the essay may need to be arranged in a different order for each audience. Therefore, if you are writing an essay for a specific class, first check with the instructor of that class to get precise information on the type and structure of essay he/she would like.
