Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions of Alkyl Halides

1. Summary of Experiment
In this experiment we will be comparing the both SN1 and SN2 reactions using various compounds and sodium iodide and silver nitrate. We will be comparing the nature of the leaving group (Cl vs Br) in the 1-halobutanes as well as the effect of the structure of the compound. The effect of the solvent polarity and temperature will also be looked at.

    The purpose of this experiment was to find the boiling point of an unknown solution in order to find its identity from the chart of substances. Also the unknown substance was compared to distilled water on viscosity and on surface tension. The unknown solution letter was D and 25 ml were obtained in a 50 ml graduated cylinder. We also obtained 25 ml of distilled water in a 50 ml graduated cylinder. The unknown solution’s viscosity and surface tension were compared to those of the distilled water, and the unknown solution scored lower in both categories compared to distilled water. The initial temperature of the unknown solution was 22.2 degrees Celsius. The boiling point of the unknown solution in the first trial was 82.3 C; second trial was 80.3 C and third was 84 C. These boiling points could not be exact measurements because the measurements were not completely accurate to one another, and the solution is not 100% pure. Isopropyl alcohol is the unknown according to the results. The percentage yield of the experiment was 102.34% and the percent error was .06. Boiling point is the temperature in which the vapor pressure of a liquid becomes equal to atmospheric pressure; this is the reaction that Isopropyl alcohol had in this experiment. The most volatile solution is pentane because it has a higher vapor pressure of 525.0 mmHg and the lowest volatile solution is Isopropyl alcohol because it has the lowest vapor pressure. Acetone has the lowest boiling point. Isopropyl alcohol started splashing before the water started boiling and this is the reason to conclude Isopropyl was the unknown…

    Nucleophilic substitution of alkyl halides can proceed by two different mechanisms – the SN2 and the SN1. The purpose of the experiment was to identify the effects that the alkyl group and the halide-leaving group have on the rates of SN1 reactions, and the effect that the solvent has on the rates of SN1 and SN2 reactions. The SN1 mechanism is a two-step nucleophilic substitution, or unimolecular displacement. In the first step of the mechanism, the carbon-halogen bond breaks and the halide ion leaving group leaves in a slow, rate-determining step to form a carbocation intermediate. The carbocation intermediate is then immediately detained by the weak nucleophile in a fast, second step to give the product. A solution of ethanol with some silver nitrate may be added provided the weak nucleophile – the alcohol. If an SN1 reaction occurs, the alkyl halide will dissociate to form a carbocation, which will then react with the ethanol to form an ether. Since there is not a strong nucleophile present, the cleavage of the carbon-halogen bond is encouraged by the formation and precipitation of silver bromide. The halide ion will combine with a silver ion from the silver nitrate to form a silver halide precipitate, which will advise that a reaction has occurred.…
