Omeprazole: A Case Study
We will begin by analyzing the medications provided as well as their potential benefits and any contraindications present. The provided patient is currently taking an appropriate dose of antihistamine to treat her seasonal allergies and has no further complaints of this condition at the present time. While seen by the urgent care provider she was also placed on a proton pump inhibitor. She was given the appropriate starter dosage; however, this medication is not usually considered first line. I know that this provider was trying to rule out what may be causing her pain and in this instance, it sounds like she did find some relief from acid reflex. A few side effects of this medication that concerns me is that is has the potential to cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. Two problems this patient does not need exacerbated. As you can see, this is a collective group of various condition that cause abdominal pain and other systematic abnormalities. Some of these are standard diagnosis that must be considered when a female of child bearing age presents with abdominal pain. Whereas, others are symptom based diagnosis.
Looking back, it would have been pertinent to gather more information from this patient regarding her family history and other risk factors that may have led to a diagnosis. Although this was an established patient to the clinic and the information was visualized in the chart, it would have been best to further investigate this information with not only the patient, but also her father that was present for the
