Old Spice affectively uses the rhetorical appeals to target and sell their product to pre-teen and young adult males. Old Spice is a known brand of Proctor and Gamble for male deodorant sprays and grooming products. Proctor and Gamble Company uploaded the commercial on YouTube and its Facebook page gaining millions of views. YouTube and Facebook are known to be the top sites and commonly used by teens and young adults. This marketing strategy by Old Spice was genius, gaining tons of hits and allowing to be shared across social media outlets.
The commercial targets pre-teen boys and young men by appealing to their wanting more independence and wanting to grow up and be liked by girls. A quote heard in the commercial more than

One of the rhetorical appeals used quite frequently is Pathos. Pathos is the way the author or in this case Old Spice tries to play with our emotions. The most obvious emotion in this commercial is humor. For example, the way the crazy-stalker mom is following her son around everywhere by riding in a laundry basket attached to her son’s car, highly unlikely but very entertaining and quite funny. People love anything that makes them laugh and Old Spice definitely played that up when those depressed mothers were wailing about their sons leaving them behind and growing up by going out with girls and leaving their chores behind. Another thing that is used as pathos is how relatable it can be for those overbearing mothers and their sons. Some men must see this commercial and think back to when they were teenagers who just wanted to get away and grow up, and even those boys that are currently going through this with their own mothers. Even I am sucked in to all the hype that is Old Spice, and I could just imagine what my seven year old brother with have to go through with my mom. Yikes!
Not only is Pathos used in this commercial, but also Ethos is used generously. Ethos is another rhetorical appeal that is used to appeal to the audience by creating credibility. Pretty much everything that is said in this video is a rhetorical appeal. The “Mom song” says, “Old Spice sprayed a man of my son,

    The repetition of “he lies” is said throughout the advertisement to make it seem like the father is at fault for “lying” to his daughter. This adds even more sympathy towards the family in the commercial. The tone of the daughter's voice plays a huge role in the feel of the commercial.
