Olam International

I. In my opinion Olam faces a major issue pertaining to how they can continue their growth over the next 10 years. Growth came easy for them in the beginning; they continued to improve their core competencies which directly added value to the company. The way they attacked improving the supply chain management as well as cultivating their employees was continually changing. With each change they were able to advance their competitive advantage, which led to great outcomes. So they are now left with how to continue to make improvements to a well run process. So plain and simple the key problem lies in: How will the resources that Olam built carry them into the future so they can maintain a competitive advantage that it has strived to build?
II. There are going to be 2 avenues we must examine in order to see if the company really is going to be able to keep their competitive advantage. The first is their Supply Chain Management and the second is going to be their Human Resource Department. The best way to examine our 2 avenues is to apply the VRIO Framework. So how is Olam’s supply chain valuable? They provide value to their customers by being able to provide them with products all year round. Olam also has the capability to provide multiple products to a customer; which in turn allows their customers to deal with fewer suppliers allowing customers’ processes to be simplified. Next we will look to see if Olam provides a rare service? We can yes to this too based on how the company is able to process their products in multiple locations / countries. They run such a lean and efficient supply chain that their competitors are not able to compete. Now let’s look at the internal strength that Olam possesses by making the resources too costly to imitate or I should say posing such a long path for competitors to get where Olam is. All acquisitions have put Olam into one of the top producers in each of its products

I believe a strong start for this company would be to invent a new product, which is trending, or develop a service to enhance the value of the existing merchandise. Wendy’s historically has fared very well within the fast-food industry; they have led or been the front runners in a number of key areas that are of extreme importance to customers. However, while Wendy’s has excelled since inception and been a key member in the big four of the fast-food industry inclusive of Wendy’s, McDonalds, Burger King, and YUM Brands, there are a number of area’s that Wendy’s could improved upon and areas of focus the company should examine more deeply in order to create stronger barriers of entry, to gain more market share, and to ensure that they can continue to grow, expand, and remain relevant even during economic hard times as the world and particularly their industry becomes more globalized. Wendy’s at this time however is in the process of refocusing on its core business function which is providing quality hamburgers and meals. Wendy’s currently has merged with Arby’s and recently spun off their interest…

Chapter 3 #2 - When is a company's competitive advantage most likely to endure over time? A company's competitive advantage is most likely to endure over time when the company has built barriers to imitation, which make it difficult for a competitor to copy the company's distinctive competencies. Another element needed is the ability to quickly react to changes in the customer's needs and have a high absorptive capacity in order to identify, value, assimilate, and use new knowledge. Lastly, the company needs to have industry dynamism and be able to keep up with the rapidly changing environment with new innovative products. Company's need to be constantly protecting their investment from imitators, creating new innovative products and lowering cost structure to maintain their competitive advantage over time.…

In the world of business today, rivals can quickly copy market position, and competitive advantage is temporary. The problem is the failure to distinguish between operational effectiveness and strategy. Operational effectiveness and strategy are very important but they work in very different ways. A company can outperform rivals only if they can deliver greater value to customers or create comparable value at a lower cost, or do both. We can have cost advantage if we perform particular activities more efficiently than competitors and we have to look from all a company’s activities, not only a few.…
