At first I was drawn to nursing as it was what my mother had done for a living for many years and I had seen much of what she did first hand with my many injuries in sports and being an adventurous child. As I went into high school and was able to see what it truly takes to be a nurse, with all of the bedside manner and to say it simply “blood and guts,” I began to rethink my decision to go into nursing. While it takes less schooling to become a nurse, it is an extremely rigorous course load and an arduous task for someone who is not fully committed to that field of work. I experienced the same kind of trials while looking at other health professions such as becoming a doctor, a veterinarian, or a dietician before finally coming to the realization that none of these were the career path for me.…

There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent time in hospitals, nursing homes and by the side of a sick relative. When my grandfather was dying of cancer, he spent as much time as he could at home with his family by his side and when the time came, he was transferred to hospital, I was 14 at the time, still very young I knew it was not about how I was feeling, this pain was his and my grandmothers. I helped look after him for the two years he was diagnosed and it was during that time, I knew where my heart was and that was nursing. With my own experience of being in and out of hospital with two complicated pregnancies, I was in awe of the nurses and midwives who did everything they could to make me feel secure and safe, I was inspired and made an already certain career choice, even more evident.…

For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…

For me, the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of the mentally ill and their families shows true personal and professional fulfilment. At the university, I did not abandon my job as a career. I joined both studies and care for part time working with adults with dementia and those with learning disability. That was when my desire to get a post graduate degree in mental health nursing developed. With work experience, I was a care assistant from 2007 till 2012. I have worked in residential homes as a full-time care assistant. My job was at dementia set up and some of my duties as a carer were administering medication to residents, supporting residents to wash and dress, assisting residents to bed and checking on them during the night as requested. When I was in the ICU I saw firsthand how impacting nurses can be and knew that once I left the military this was the career I wanted to pursue. I was alone, young, and recently diagnose with a life altering disease. The RN I had not only cared for me but also was there and talked to me when I needed it most. She helped me physically get back to health but also mentally helped me when I had no one by me. I was inspired greatly by how well she did her job. I want to be just a great as the RN that took care of me. I would like to help someone else through difficult times with same level of care I received or better. I have also unfortunately seen the downside to nursing. my uncle pass way after a RN gave him the wrong medication. I lost my favorite uncle to something that could have been prevented. It is very hard dealing a love one passing. It was even more difficult on us because we know if someone payed more attention to detail that he would still be here. Witnessing my uncle pass I realized the only way I can a difference is to become the difference. I want to be the change. I want to be the best nurse that god has intended me to…
