Nursing Need Theory

Nursing theories are an important way to gain knowledge in the nursing field by exploring the unknown, generating assumptions, and developing relationships. Theories offer a way of looking at nursing in clear terms that can be passed on to others. They guide nurses to the structure of the professional practice by helping to describe, explain, and predict everyday experiences and enhance the independence of nursing. When nurses use theory and theory-based evidence to structure their practice, it improves the quality of care (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015).

To promote independence I assist my patient with activities of daily living, urging them to do as much as they can for themselves. If my assistance is needed with feeding, bathing, or dressing, I do so while always showing dignity and support. To help a patient to gain leg strength, I teach exercises to both the family and the patient so they will be able to walk again. I perform range-of-motion exercises to prevent muscle atrophy and contractures. I assist in feeding a weak patient to become stronger. If the patient does not like the food that is served, I will ask them to list the foods they find appealing, and replace it with something that will be eaten. For those that will not eat, I can place a nasogastric tube for continued nutrition until hunger returns. To maintain or gain health, I educate the family on how to care for and assist the patient at home after being discharged from the hospital to prevent future hospitalizations. I educate my patients on the use of an incentive spirometer after surgery to prevent the complications of pneumonia. I make sure the floors and the environment are kept clear of potential dangers to prevent potential falls or
