Nt1310 Unit 9 Final Paper
1) What is Electro-Plating?

Electroplating is the process of coating a metal object with a thin layer of another metal by means of electrolysis.

2) What is Copper Plating?

Copper plating is a coating of copper metal on another material, often other metals. Plating is designed to increase durability, strength, or visual appeal, and copper plating specifically is often used to improve heat and electrical conductivity.

3) What are the uses of electro-plating/copper plating?

Electroplating is used to give metal objects a better appearance or to protect them from corrosion, wear, or rust. Tableware, trays, decorative pieces, and jewelry are plated with gold or silver to make them more attractive.
Copper plating is seen most often in wiring and cookware. Occasionally, copper plating is used for decorative purposes, giving objects a brassy look. Copper plating is more often used, however, for electrical wires since copper conducts heat extremely well. Additionally, many circuit boards are plated with copper.

Step 1: First, a container is filled with a solution of a salt of the metal that is to form the coating. For example, if copper is to form the coating, the solution will consist of copper sulfate (a salt of copper) mixed with water. This solution is called the electrolytic bath. The object to be plated is immersed in the bath. A metal bar, composed either of the metal that is to form the coating or of a metal that is not affected by the electrolytic bath, is also immersed in the bath. The entire apparatus is called an electrolytic cell

Step 2: The object to be coated is connected to the negative terminal of an electric battery or other source of direct current, and becomes the cathode (the electrode through which negative charge enters an electrical device). The metal bar is connected to the positive terminal of the electric power source and becomes the anode (the electrode through which negative charge

Copper was the most important metal used in early times. The alloying of copper to produce bronze represents a significant step forward in metallurgical practice: the resulting alloy is both stronger and less brittle than copper alone. There are a variety of different methods by which metal and metal artifacts can be produced or manufactured. Casting using the lost-wax method was an…

Copper wire is used to power appliances which use more current. The difference is between signal circuits and power circuits. Signal circuits operate at extremely low current levels and use digital logic voltage levels (less than 5 VDC). Power circuits on the other hand require larger amounts of current to operate electrical devices such as motors, heating units, etc.…

    • Once the setup and all of the charging is completed, it's time for the actual painting process to begin. The positively charged paint is sprayed toward the metal object, which draws the paint toward its surface. This attraction is so strong that if an object (say a metal rail) is only sprayed from one side, the charge will actually pull the paint around so that it covers the entire metal surface. This method requires very little in the way of protection, since drop cloths won't be necessary most of the time. The process can produce some bad odors, though, so it's recommended that electrostatic painting be done outdoors or while there are few people around…
