1. Using filter, I found out the minimum number of defects by batch was zero, and the maximum number of defects by batch was twenty-three. Therefore, we can say that the number of defects that are more than ten are major problems and should be flagged. I chose ten as the number to base it on because when you compare the number of defects to the batch size (500, 1000, 5000 and10000) anything less than ten is rather small and is to be expected. Conditional formatting was used to highlight all defects which were greater than ten.

Using the data above, which includes only the information for batches that had greater than ten defects, I created a pivot table to summarize how many defects were produced from each machine. It shows that machines six and seven produced the most defects, which were greater than ten.

I created another pivot table comparing the total count of defects, including the defects from one to ten, that each machine produced. Machine six and seven still produced the most instances of defects when compared to the other machines.

Although I’ve assumed that machine six and seven are contributing to the increase

This showed that although employee 2222 had the most defects, machines six and seven had consistently produced defects for each employee. Employee 5555 produced the most defects using machine seven, and employee 2222 produced the most defects using machine six.

Therefore, I can’t say with certainty that a specific employee is responsible for the defects being produced. I noticed that machine six and seven are being used the most by employees. Perhaps it is time to take these machines out of production to be serviced. I suggest that machine six and seven be removed from the line, and have employees work with machines five and eight. During this time, machines six and seven should be repaired. This will help to reduce the amount of defects being produced and should increase

There had been several rough quarters at the Engstrom Auto Mirror plant in Richmond, Indiana, a privately owned business that manufactured mirrors for trucks and automobiles and employed 209 people. For more than a year, plant manager Ron Bent and his assistant, Joe Haley, had focused their Friday meetings on the troubling numbers, but the tenor of their May 14, 2007, meeting was different. Both men sensed that they now faced a crisis at the plant. Bent was talking animatedly to Haley: “This is the third productivity problem in, what, two weeks? We can’t climb out of this downturn with performance like that.” He scowled as he signed the authorization to air-freight a large order to the Toyota plant where Sam Martinez managed the assembly line. The difference in cost was astronomical, and it had been necessitated by the slow pace of productivity at Engstrom, which meant in this case that a job due for completion on Monday wasn’t completed until Thursday. But Bent couldn’t afford to make a late delivery to Martinez; he was a prized but demanding customer who had designated Engstrom as a certified supplier one year earlier. Only one other supplier for Martinez’s plant had achieved certified supplier status—a recognition of both extraordinary reliability and quality. The worry lines on Bent’s face deepened. Certified status meant that Martinez had personally authorized Engstrom products to be used on the auto lines without a quality inspection. Along with productivity problems, product-quality issues had also been creeping into the work done at Engstrom. Bent hoped that he was not paying to air-expedite defective mirrors to Martinez. Haley said, “Ron, we both know the employees have been complaining for months, but yesterday and today the talk has been pretty hostile. I’m not saying there’s a definite connection between nearly late delivery and the grumbling I heard, but…

Quality Associates, a consulting firm has been approached by a client to analyze their manufacturing process. The client came to Quality Associates with a sample of 800 observations that they had collected during times when the manufacturing process was running smoothly. The sample of 800 yielded a sample standard deviation of 0.21. Quality Associates suggested that the company periodically take a sample of 30 to monitor their process on an ongoing basis to quickly learn if process was operating at a satisfactory level, and if not it could quickly be adjusted. The specifications of the design calls for the mean of the process to be 12.…

Bryson Corporation is a cable division assembly plant. Stanton Wong is the quality supervisor of the company and his boss, Harry Jackson, is the plant manager and a vice president of operations. Stanton was responsible for preparing a detailed report of all test results when a batch of cable was ready for shipment for Bryson. On the other side, Jane Conway performed additional sample testing as the customer’s source inspector instead on Bryson’s test data. In the situation of this case, Stanton had tested a sample taken from an early lot and had good results because of the short turnaround period which revealed problems on Friday that two failed of 10 samples. He is worried about how to report the failure results to his boss as they have protocol which requires that a test failure be reported for such results.…
