• In the late 1930s, another process called frequency modulation
(FM) was applied to radio broadcasts.
• The telephone network is a global system that literally has wired all but the most remote areas of the planet.
• This system was not designed all at once; no one knew the exact course it would take.
• By the late 1940s, monochrome, or black and white, television had become a commer-cial success.
• Many engineers, scientists, and inventors fueled its growth by pushing science to new lim-its in a quest to improve communication and share information.
• In 1954, the first coast -to -coast color television broadcast took place. • The laser was invented in 1960.
