Norden Farm Selects Sony 4k to Digitise Content
Norden Farm selects Sony 4K to digitise content, expand its offering and improve picture quality for film-goers in Maidenhead
Basingstoke, 7 February 2013 – Sony Digital Cinema has today announced that Norden Farm, an Arts Centre based in Maidenhead, has installed its new 4K projector to transform the viewing experience for customers, enable the delivery of alternative content, and boost its corporate offering, allowing the organisation to deliver a wider range of services to its local community.
The Sony SRX-R515, Sony’s latest 4K digital cinema offering, will see the Arts House transition from analogue film based on 35mm projectors to a more reliable, better quality and future-ready digital offering. The new projector will be installed in the organisation’s main, 200-seat auditorium by Sound Associates, one of Sony’s Authorised Dealers for the UK and Irish Cinema market. The installation will ensure the Arts House is able to offer its customers the very best picture and sound quality, while also allowing it to diversify into offering new entertainment experiences – such as opera and theatre. The superior image quality will make the venue more attractive to corporate clients looking to stage presentations and events, while also easing the administrative burden and operational costs associated with screening different types of content.
Matt Biss, Technical Manager at Norden Farm, commented: "Bringing digital cinema to our business is going to have a huge impact on the range and quality of services we’ll be able to offer customers – from their experience of the independent films we screen to the packages we’re able to offer corporate clients. “We’ll be able to offer new services beyond traditional content which is critical to the future success of the business. For instance, we recently screened a performance of La Boheme from the Royal Opera House. The event was a complete sell out and the audience left asking us for similar events in future – highlighting

IMAX films are shot and projected on 15 perforation /70mm film - the largest film format in existence. It is only possible to project these onto the huge screen because of the remarkable high definition and clarity of these film frames. And it is these huge film frames that are at the heart of the IMAX experience. Three times larger than the traditional 70 mm cinemascope frames they have pushed the quality of motion picture images to new heights (quite literally). The key to their superior performance and reliability is the unique “Rolling Loop” film movement, interestingly an Australian invention, developed by Ron Jones. The Rolling Loop advances the film horizontally in a smooth, wave-like motion. During projection, each frame is positioned on a fixed registration point and the film is held firmly against the rear element of the lens by a vacuum. As a result, the picture and focus steadiness are far above normal standards and provide outstanding image clarity. The powerful 3D projector uses two 15,000 watt bulbs (the average 35mm projector uses a bulb between 2,000 and 4,000 watts). The huge heat generated requires a dedicated cooling system that pumps 1,600 cubic metres of air and 36 litres of distilled water through the lamp housing every minute to keep the projector…

“The Golden Age of Television” is a phrase often used to describe today’s entertainment landscape, with successful shows such as ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of Cards’ getting huge viewing figures underpinned by undeniably high quality content. This shift in the quality and ambition of television marks a change in its ontology but what effect has this had on cinema?

Quentin Tarantino, Oscar winner and indie cinema legend, has, with an eye to the rise of digital projection, referred to modern cinema as “TV in public” and suggested that soon he will retire from working…

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of the University of Western Ontario stages a single high quality theatre production every year for the local community. This year will be a performance of HMS Pinafore. Francis Vanden Hoven was selected to be the producer of the performance and is faced with budget restrictions, tight deadlines and the challenge of producing a high quality show that will generate positive reviews. Francis is a business student at the university with no prior theatre experience. In order to prepare he has scheduled a meeting with his assistants Deb, Mona and Liz. During the meeting many factors that affect the production were discussed. Some of which include wardrobe, set construction, marketing, volunteers, hired staff, blackout dates, budget and so on. The task at hand for Francis Vanden seems to be proper project management to ensure a successful production. The best way to attack the challenges is to organize the tasks and timelines, this can be done with a Product Process Matrix that displays all the jobs in a clear manner and determine the critical path of the project.…

Early in the 1980s, movie producers were offered a high-definition television system developed by Sony and NHK in the late 70s. This system (called NHK Hi-vision) and its variants are capable of producing images having essentially the same detail as 35 mm film[1]. With these systems, a scene could be recorded, played and edited immediately, and then transferred to film. As a consequence, many of the intermediate delays in conventional film production were eliminated. The new medium also offered a number of possibilities for special effects not possible in conventional film production.…

In the 1890s, a new motion picture film camera that could not only record, but also project and develop was created. This piece of technology was known as the Cinematograph. It was to be superior to Edison’s Kinetoscope in it’s ability to take sharper images and have better illumination. Not only this, but the Cinematograph had a weight of only 16 lbs. which increased its mobility and ease of placement. Though the Cinematograph was manually operated using a hand crank, and the kinetoscope was electrically powered, the big difference was that the cinematograph was able to project images onto a screen enabling large audiences to be able to view the production simultaneously. One last arguably better quality that the cinematograph had was a slower frame rate of 12 frames per second versus Edison’s 48 frames which created a lot of noise and distraction to…
