Samsung's Design Successes

In the 2000s, LCD TVs and Plasma TVs were gaining in popularity, while the popularity of the much bulkier projection TVs was waning.

Therefore, Samsung's design team started work on developing a slim projection TV based on digital light processing (DLP) technology. The result was the highly acclaimed HLP series of DLP TVs, which had the processing engine standing upright and functioning as a pedestal base...

Criticism

Some critics commented that even if Samsung's design capabilities had improved greatly, the company still lacked a coherent design. "Samsung has improved, but I don't see an identity in their design that really speaks to consumers,"said Jim Wicks, vice-president (in charge of designing cell phones), Motorola Inc. According to some other critics, the company still did not have the design culture of Apple Computer Corp., or the breadth and depth in design that Sony possessed...

Outlook

In September 2006, Samsung unveiled the Syncmaster 971P, an LCD monitor. The product was unique in the sense that it had a geometric shaped stand, unlike conventional LCD monitors (See Exhibit XI for a photograph of the Syncmaster 971P). The company claimed that the S-Shaped stand gave the monitor additional stability...

The underlying technology for flat panel displays was invented in the United States in the late 1960s by RCA. But after RCA and rivals Westinghouse and Xerox opted not to pursue the technology, the Japanese company Sharp made aggressive investments in flat panel displays. By the early 1990s Sharp was selling the first flat panel screens, but as the Japanese economy plunged into a decade-long recession, investment leadership shifted to South Korean companies such as Samsung. Then the 1997 Asian crisis hit Korea hard, and Taiwanese companies seized leadership. Today, Chinese companies are starting to elbow their way into the flat panel display manufacturing industry.…

High efficiency and high power factor single-stage balanced forward-flyback converter Yoon Choi, Moon-Hwan Keum, and Sang-Kyoo Han† Jeong-il Kang Power Electronics System Laboratory, POESLA Kookmin University Seoul, 136-702, Republic of Korea E-mail : †djhan@kookmin.ac.kr Visual Display, R&D Team Samsung Electronics. Co. Ltd. Suwon, Republic of Korea E-mail : jeongil.kang@samsung.com Abstract— In this paper, a high efficiency and high power factor single-stage balanced forward-flyback converter merging a foward and flyback converter topologies is proposed. The conventional AC/DC flyback converter can achieve a good power factor but it has a high offset current through the transformer magnetizing inductor, which results in a large core loss and low power conversion efficiency. And, the conventional forward converter can achieve the good power conversion efficiency with the aid of the low core loss but the input current dead zone near zero cross AC input voltage deteriorates the power factor. On the other hand, since the proposed converter can operate as the forward and flyback converters during switch on and off periods, respectively, it cannot only perform the power transfer during an entire switching period but also achieve the high power factor due to the flyback operation.…

Samsung Electronics (Mobile Division) operates in one of the most competitive markets of the world. According to the US Federal Communication Commission 67 new Smartphone devices are introduced every year. Samsung traditionally had a conservative image that focused on low-price products for the lower end of the market. With low prices it was able to compete in the lower-market whereas in the upper market it had lesser penetration. To penetrate the upper-market Samsung had to give up their lower-market position and focus on innovation and perceiving a higher brand value.…
