Negativity Rules the Land
Positive vs Negative Think positive. That’s what everyone says when someone is negative. If you’re a negative thinker you’ll be considered a “downer” or a “party pooper” and no one likes to be with someone who always has something negative to say. Nothing good comes from thinking negatively. That’s where you’re wrong. Negativity is all around the world and it has ability to develop our self consciousness positively. According to Linton Weeks’ article, “A wave of negativism rolls across the land. Many Americans are against instead of for. They would rather stop than start, subtract than add, demolish than build.” It’s easy to give up then to try again. When you believe something positive is going to happen it turns out to be a failure. But with that feeling of failure it motivates our consciousness to think positive. Although positive thinking relieves stress and promotes better health, I agree that negative thinking can also promote a positive lifestyle because it helps to be more aware and drive for improvement. Linton Weeks’ article, “What is Going No? Negativity in America”, discusses the impact of negative thinking across America. He firsts points out how many people have become successful with the power of negativity. Few have published books, some have spoken motivation speeches and others believe it is the key to success. It is used in politics as a weapon to opposed other candidates and used online to influence traffic. A professor of psychology from Bowdoin College, Barbara S. Held, has noticed the influence negativity has on the positive psychology in American culture. To have a deeper understanding of this positive-negative dichotomy, Held and a few of her fellow colleagues conducted an experiment to observe the relationship between each other and formed a group called the “Negateers”. The Negateers represent the naysayers who fight against the yaysayers in America. Held concludes that the two opposites cannot be separated from one another. She

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information” (Positive Thinking). Being optimistic is absolutely mental. The Mayo Clinic shares the most effective ways to becoming optimistic, “If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way” (Positive thinking). In order to stay positive the person needs to know they can get over the challenges, “One fundamental attitude is to presume that all problems can be solved and we possess in us the ability to solve the problem in hand. Adopting such an attitude, we would explore all resources and go the extra mile to get things done” (Yew). It is possible to stay positive when conditions are not running…

Rodolfo Costa once said; “Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible” (Goodreads). Remaining positive has always held an important role in my life. I strive to find positives in every negative situation, and remember that I can always learn something from it. Sometimes changing the way you view a situation can make all the difference. Even through times where I have had every reason to give up, I have chosen to keep a positive attitude. I have found that when I decide to do this, it makes me significantly happier, and I take much more away from the situation.…

But hey, just look on the bright side. I mean it’s always darkest before the dawn. If you dream it, you can do it. Watch. No? Oh well. America today is decidedly and unwaveringly optimistic, we are positive thinkers. Positive thinking is defined by one of its leading advocates, Dr. Charlene Proctor as “the process of choosing positive emotions to create an outlook that translates into a new or better-chosen reality.” In short, our thoughts and attitude can affect the course of the outside world, so we should strive to be positive to reap positive outcomes, while stifling negativity for the opposite reason. We praise the optimist while shunning the pessimist. But the question is does every cloud have a silver lining? In order to show positive thinking as the dangerous paradigm that it is we will first examine the causes of positive thinking, move onto its effects, and then finally round out with solutions.…

A study done by Professor Barbara Fredrickson proves that positive thinking is better for bodies and minds. Fredrickson states, “Positive emotions expand our awareness, our ability to take in more and to see the bigger picture is facilitated.” (Malcolm). Here, she’s basically saying that if positivity is used then more minds will be open to suggestions and will see even more opportunities. A positive mindset can help physical health as well. “Having more moments of that open mindset helps us connect with others and it helps us build our resilience and our physical health because we become more energetic.” (Malcolm). Fredrickson is telling us that negative thinking causes bodies to have less energy and makes people moody which is never satisfying. When a positive attitude is used, it can be easy to notice by others and they can then tell if someone is approachable. “With positive emotions, there is more of an easiness in the torso and I think that’s consequently because other people can pick up and let others know that you’re safe to approach.”(Malcolm). Being visibly kind and approachable makes others want to be kind back and could possibly make them think positively as well. Positive thinking is a major factor of mental health and can directly affect multiple things in…
