Mystery Story - English
THE HOOK

“Dad do we really have to go?” I whined. It is the start of winter and my dad wants to go camping in the middle of nowhere. It’s going to be so boring, just me by myself, No kids, no games and worst of all no PlayStation. I mean, I don’t mind going camping in a tent, but does dad really have to make it in the middle of my only holidays away from school? Not to mention in the middle of winter, if I was a polar bear I probably wouldn’t mind.
“Yes Adam we have already booked and paid for our spot. I will make it a fun little 4 day trip. As soon as you get home you can do whatever you like!” Dad tried to bribe me.
I know dad really wants to go and I feel bad, it’s one of those things that you know you should do but you just don’t want to. Such as playing PlayStation games, you know you should get off and do homework but you just can’t get yourself to do it.
Dad is the sort of person that buys all the latest gear but never uses it. I sort of feel bad for not showing any interest, so I guess I should go just to make it up to him. He’s just sitting there looking a bit disappointed. I just ask him about all his new gear so it seems like I’m interested in why he spent four hundred dollars for a two man tent.
He’s starting to feel abit better now that he thinks I want to go, so we head off. It was forty minutes into the trip that I find out it’s a 4 hour drive! I had a sleep for about 3 hours and then we were almost there. I was so relieved.
Later on I help dad set up the tent. We had only seen about 6 different people in the same park as us. The only one I really took notice was of some weirdo that had no tent, just a white van. He seemed to be heading down to the river to fish but it was getting dark and he was just leaving. A bit weird I reckon.
Dad and I agree in making rice and eggs for dinner which was made well by dad’s latest stoves and pots. I must say dinner was better than I thought it would be, I thought it would be grubs and some snake. I

It was going to be a short ride only about 4 hours altogether through the South Dakota mountains. About an hour into our ride, we reached the mountains and as soon as we did Brody, Eli, Maddy, and I rode our horses to the top of the mountains. When we reached the top of the mountains we got off our horses and looked out over the South Dakota scenery, it was a beautiful view. I have never seen a better view in my life. You could see so far since we were up so high in the air and when we looked down at Tommy and Cassie they looked like ants. After we took a few pictures we headed back down to Tommy and Cassie. We went a little further after we got down from the mountain and then we turned back and headed towards camp. We arrived back at camp we washed, fed, and watered the horses. When we were done with that stuff we made a fire and started carving on sticks for a competition we were having and then at about 11 we went to…

I have always loved going to the lake, but this time was a little bit different, we had a boat. It wasn’t a very big boat, but it was big enough to put a smile on my face. Not only did we have a boat, but we had a tube as well. Every other year I was told I wasn’t allowed to go in the tube; but after repetitive asking to ride in it my Dad finally said yes.…

I was sat squished in the back of one of the minivans with Sam, our treats and various forms of entertainment for the long ride sat between us. The drive was long and boring. We slept, played every car ride game possible and watched movies. The 806.2 miles seemed to take everlasting. We stopped for two nights at a hotel and took a day to go to an amusement park. My love for amusement parks was stronger than my urge to return home and after spending the day on roller coaster rides and eating cotton candy, I decided for a brief moment that maybe this trip wouldn't be so bad after…

There is a classic 1980’s movie called “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” The dad has a brilliant idea to pack up his wife and two kids in the back of their station wagon and drive across the country to Wally World theme park. The trip was nothing liked it was planned to be, but the gave the family a chance to be together and bond. And with that kind of movie spirit my dad decided we were going to take our own little family vacation. Except this time there are seven family members packed into an undersized mini van driving up to our nations capital.…

It was in June of 2008, I think, that my Cub Scout pack went on a weekend campout. I should mention that my father was at this point the Cubmaster of the pack. The campground stretched across a small peninsula that jutted out into Island Lake. The lodge/cabin there was a wooden structure with two large rooms inside; one for eating and one for sleeping. We didn’t sleep in the cabin though. We were big boys, so we slept in tents on the various tent pads located around the camp. My tent was…
