My Writing Style Reflection
To be honest, I have always used my emotions when I write, whether it is for a hobby or for my work in college. My emotions have always helped me push through assignments that I considered difficult and taking a position on projects that required me to take a side. However, my emotional style of writing was not able to overcome this new style of writing that my rhetorical communications professor introduced to me. I will admit it, I did get aggravated in the beginning of the class because this kind of writing was unfamiliar to me. But I began to broaden my horizons on how I write and properly communicating my own ideas which led me to develop my theory of writing through four major assignments that was given to me. The theory of writing that I have developed over the semester involves adapting my writing style in order to fit what is required for the paper. What this means is that my writing style is constantly changing rather than being fixed on only one style of writing. Due to my …show more content…
There were terms that I struggled to understand such as logos, pathos, ethos, and discourse community since I was never taught those terms in high school but this was the first time I encountered those terms. As I reflected on this first project, I was reminded in my interview with Mike Staub of what was needed for the criminal justice major in order to communicate properly. Mike told me that the kind of writing that was required for the criminal justice major is factual based rather than the writing being more emotional based, which I preferred. But, this project helped me understand that my emotionally charged writing would only make me struggle in understanding what was needed for both my criminal justice major and the remainder of the writing that I have to do in the

Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in-class exercises, and final assignments, I think I have figured out my own theory of writing.…

Writing class in my life has always been centered on analyzing mediums such as books, articles, movies, poems, and other things of that nature. The analysis would always consist of considering both viewpoints of an argument: what the author is saying and what the author is contrasting his or her viewpoints with. In addition to this, I have always been expected to incorporate my own thoughts on the subject of analysis. I feel as if I am a very good formal writer on serious subjects, and a not-so-great writer when it comes to talking about my own opinions and thoughts on an open topic. The best writing that I have ever done and was very proud of was the final paper for my Music Education philosophy course last semester. For this assignment we were expected to research a certain pedagogy, write about it, and synthesize our own pedagogy from what we had learned about that semester about all of the different pedagogies. Over the years from my first actual writing course in 9th grade, writing to me has developed from something I did to please the teacher into…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

Coming into preparing for my paragraph I had three goals; make a strong a valid point, answering all of the possible questions a reader may have, and having a structured well developed paragraph. I wanted to maitain these goals throughout the writing process. I had to do minimal research becasuse I was familiar with the topic. There are three reasons why I chose to write about the qualities it takes to be a firefighter. First, I was able to choose the topic that I was most comfortable with. Second, I knew a lot about the efforts it takes to becoming a firefighter. I had a lot of outside information that most people would not get by simply using google. Finally, I felt for the first time, that I organized my writing in such a way that the message was clear and my opinion was supported with facts and life experiences. By doing this parargraph, I learned that it was important to have an organized outline, facts that support my position and details that enhance the message. It was a very long process for online one single paragraph but it allowed me to get several peer edits and other peoples opinions to make it an exceptional reading. Allowing my peers to look at my rough draft and make corrections or suggestions was a great and simple way for me to enhance my brain into creating structure. It also allowed me to interact with my classmates and brain storm. Overall it was well drawn out process and beneficial experience. I was able to maintain my goals throughout the process and learn some new techniques and develop them into my writing.…

When one masters a certain practice, one becomes confident and nearly perfects the practice either because one had guidance or practiced continuously. I have not put myself in either one of those situations. To be honest, I write ‘put myself’ because I believe I had the choice of removing myself from classrooms to another better one; and the choice of being able to discipline myself to practice writing continuously.…

In regards of the revision for the portfolio assignment, I chose to revise my critical autobiography. Throughout my writing experience I have always struggled with my body paragraphs. I tend to always have a strong introduction but once I began to go into my first body paragraph I lose my train of thought. One of my main issues is that I get to wordy. Which then leaves me with fragments. Lastly, which I’m sure most people have an issue with is basic grammar errors such as, spelling and placing commas. I feel that my writing has had a small progression. Through this class I have learned more writing techniques that have helped me as a writer.…

I agree with you when you talk about the subject having to be interesting. I think that when people pick up a book, the first thing they do is read the back cover to find out what the book is about. If the subject is not interesting they usually don't bother to read the book.…

The Nature of a person's writing style can sometimes show more about an individual then the words they actually write, the poetic twists in sentence flow or the professional structure of their grammar. Writing styles are as unique as fingerprints and to define them can be as arduous as mastering the skills required to properly form one. In the quest to define my own style I discovered a detail that I have determined encapsulates the style with which I write; I write with passion. When I say I am a passionate writer I don't mean that I love to write but more that my level of personal affection toward the subject I am writing on directly affects the emotional nature I write in. In other words, I write more expressively and artistically the…

Imagine a beautiful mountain with snow covering its peak and as the snow melts it forms a small waterfall going down the mountain to the bottom. Doesn’t that make you want to close your eyes and just picture that detail and picture all the colors and beautiful scenery. These are the tools which authors and filmmakers use to get their audiences to be interested and indulge in reading a book or watching a movie. The way an author writes a book allows the reader to use their own imagination. The reader does so by the author’s use of diction and imagery. One may think that TV episodes or movies are different, and yes they are a little different compared to books because the reader, in this case the audience, may not need to use their imagination as much but nonetheless the director and story writer do rely on diction and imagery in order to connect with their audience. The use of characters in books and TV shows is also a very important tool because it allows the audience to be able to relate with the characters that the author uses. The book How the Grinch stole Christmas and South park episode Something Wall-Mart This Way Come both get their point across to their audience by making use of diction, imagery and characters but TV episode Something Wall-Mart This Way Come is able to get its point across more effectively.…

Throughout the years of my schooling experience I’ve adapted a love for writing and have came to love writing essays. As students moan and groan I silently rejoice because I get a chance to express myself through writing. To me, writing is like an art people use to express things the can’t say face to face. Out of the essays I have written so far this year I definitely have my favorite little pieces. Every writer has that little ‘I really love this part’ in any of their pieces. But, altogether my favorite thing about my writing would be my creativeness while writing. In my personal narrative, titled The Memories That Make Me, the introduction states “Over the months and years, we’ve grown like a melody to its lyrics, inseparable. And now the memories stick like glue… I was almost too quick to judge.” Personally, the metaphor incorporated into the introduction sets off the paper. Towards the beginning of the year we studied origin stories. How Murder Came To Be was one of the most challenging but the…

When walking into my first period class as high schooler, I pictured myself as a well-rounded writer. My impression suddenly changed after a few weeks in Ms. Giroux’s class. As I received my first ECQ grade with a blood-inked C written in the corner, I realized I was going to have to put a lot more effort into my writing. I began to spend more time and put tedious details in my writing while doing deep revisions after my paper was complete. Towards the beginning of the year, my writing lacked creativity and organization skills.…
