My Role As The Deputy Director Of Public Safety And Safety Case Study
My role as the Deputy Director of Public Safety and Defense within OMES-IS is to put out fires, provide guidance, and help make decisions when needed. Within our organization we have Strategist, you can think of them as IT directors for specific agencies in the state. For example, we have strategists that help the Department of Public Safety, Corrections, Narcotics, and the OSBI. The strategist’s purpose is to help guide these agencies with their information technology needs.
Their role is essential and challenging the strategist work with some agencies that feel they can do IT better and cheaper then OMES-IS, unfortunately, most appropriated agencies must abide by the state law for IT-consolidation, and they have no say. These strategists

From my past experiences, I started to ask questions. Sternberg states that as part of intelligence is the ability to learn and reason when novel situations crop up, however, this also includes being able to think and tie this experience back to what you have already learned. By me asking questions, I was able to gather information about the current environment over at the DOC data center. I asked if they knew that facilities management was not our responsibility, our job was to make sure that the critical systems that ran their daily operations were functioning. The answer was yes. I asked if they were getting an AC repair person to come out and fix the unit? DOC received an approved PO that took two weeks to get, and it would take another week to have a vendor come out and repair the system. I asked why their operations manager was adamant that we take this path of having our people come in over the weekend and open the door to keep the space cool? The strategist explained that the ops manager felt that this was our responsibility and did not want this to go outside of DOC and “we” as a group needed to work together. These question would help me understand the problem at hand and get a good picture of the environment and a sense of the individuals involved. By leveraging the components of intelligence which are meta, performance, and knowledge components helped me navigate through this unexpected situation. The decision process was taking the information and weighing the good and bad of the problem at hand. I did not use weighted values to determine what path I was going to make. I used more of a heuristic approach, looking at the environment that was DOC, the individuals that I have interacted with at DOC, and looking at the history of our relationship with this agency.
