My Pigpen House
To My Renovated Pig Pen House
Amidst the exodus of many Filipino professionals to work abroad seeking for a greener pasture for their families, I was left for the benefits of my countrymen. I am a public school teacher for three years and it gives me the idealism to continue serving my country. Every time I look at the big smiles of my students when they are happy for the knowledge they acquired from me, I feel bless for the satisfaction that my profession gives. My students came from a variety of social classes from those that have and from those who don’t have.
Every morning I committed myself for this duty of serving our people with pride, dignity and honesty. We condole each other when we share our heartaches, we grieve for the lapses we did but stay inspired to continue, for we have learned our lessons. We laugh for the joy this life offers for us even in times of desperations and financial instability. I promised to myself to never leave my classroom without seeing their eyes cheer in gladness. And at the end of my class, I always give them some words of encouragement from famous people to let them feel that they can do what others did. Teaching helped me to continue the idealism almost vanish in the hearts of some and it always a humble experience when I saw my students walk at the stage wearing academic vestments which in fact, the realization of their dreams happen.
Maybe the inspiration that prompted me to continue helping others came from my childhood. My family and I leave for 16 years in a house never or should I say will never be ours. At first we are staying in a house at a wood factory for 7 years, my mother was a laborer sometimes she is a dishwasher, laundry girl and a house cleaner while my father is a carpenter. I do every child that has love for their parents did, at my young age I am aware of the life we have and the painful truth that I will never go for college. But my mother insisted that I should study with a promise that she and my father will work desperately for my education. After we stayed in that house we move in the same place because of some renovations the owner did with the factory in a simple yet humble box-like room, we sleep, we eat and entertain friends in the same place. We lived there for five years.
When the time I graduated from high school the queries begin to arise whether or not I can continue my study. Until one of my family friends called and with her sincere generosity she promised to help me with my schooling. She believed in my capacity that I can finish my education and become a teacher. But my college years never became smooth, there were times which I came to school holding only my transportation fare and the faith that I can finish. There are nights when I hear my parents discussed the financial problems which will always surprised us every morning. But nevertheless I still hold the fire of my desire to continue fulfilling my family’s dream for me.
My graduation came and it’s a day of total ecstasy. I cried a lot during the baccalaureate mass/hooding ceremony because when my mother put my hood on me she just say, “Who can say that you cannot finish schooling?” And in a program where I received medals of recognition accompanied by her, the guests who handed the medals were surprised when I refuse to wear the medals and gently put the medals on my mother and I said, “She is the true honoree at this moment.”
And again for the third time we were moved from a box-like house to a renovated pig pen home because of some changes the owner did again with the factory. It is simply a pig pen dress to become a home. From this humble house we shared our love and care most with each other. A simple yet magnificent home for us.
My days becomes brighter and brighter because of the inspirations my students and my life give. I crossed the obstructions of failure because of the people who believed in my capacities, helped us in our needs and sheltered us in the core of their hearts. I always believed that it is my duty to reciprocate the kindness someone did for us to the people who truly need it the most, in whom I see myself once, studying and drawing my future in thoughts – my students! I want to accompany them to the deepest corner of their dreams, to the profound section of their being!

As a child I always loved my teachers. They always found a way to make learning fun and exciting. I knew I wanted to work with kids when I got older and help them find learning just as fun and exciting as I did. Everyday I’d come home from school and teach what I’ve learned to my younger siblings using the same methods my teachers used. They began finding learning just as enjoyable as I’d hoped. From then on I was inspired to be part of the life changing team of childcare workers and instill the thoughts that learning is fun in young children today.…

I use to think that being a teacher was going to be a short eight hours of teaching and being with children. Having summers off made being a teacher seem a lot more beneficial to. Being a teacher seemed to be the easiest career choice out there for me. After viewing the second grade classroom in Shepherdstown Elementary it is safe to say that I have changed my opinion of teaching. There is unquestionably another side to the world of a teacher that can only be seen inside a classroom. Watching the students made me realize that being a teacher will no doubt carry some difficulties but, it will all pay off in the end. Observing has made me realize that there is more to teaching, the classroom, and what goes on inside.…

If you were to ask a teacher why they chose their profession, you should not be surprised to hear them say they felt called to educate the next generation. As honorable as this calling may be, it comes with great responsibility. Teachers can become overwhelmed, feeling like the weight of the world and its future rests on their shoulders. They cannot be like parents who can choose to limit their focus on investing in their own children. A teacher’s influence can be limited to their school, their classroom, and their students.…

My friend Scott, came back from vacation in Europe and contracted meningitis, he passed away the night he got back. His mother contacted me through facebook and explained what happened. My good friend Josie died of an overdose after having a mixture of drugs in her system. Scott's death was unstoppable, however Josie's death could have easily been prevented. After dealing with both loses I knew I had a passion to assist people who are facing monsters in their life. In 2014 I began teaching at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Martinsville, Virginia. It was my second year of teaching and I was eager, “prepared,” and confident. I learned quickly that this was unlike any school in which I had ever taught. Patrick Henry is a predominantly economically disadvantaged school which means, I was not as prepared as I thought. My first year at Patrick Henry was challenging and there were many bumps in the road but, I learned how to navigate them quickly. Teaching at Patrick Henry has been one of the most rewarding things I have done it my life. By obtaining my Maters in Curriculum and Instruction I hope to give back to a school community that I have learned so much from.…

Ever since I was young, I was always interested in the idea of helping people other than myself. I never knew the actual meaning of truly helping another person until October, 2010, my freshman year. My resolve for helping others sparked into a flame when I visited a church in San Jose where I experienced something that would completely change my life. At this church, there was an organization called Milal that helps take care of people with disabilities. It was in that place that I was able to learn the true meaning of helping others.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

    Goal Statement

My main reason for wanting to become a teacher is because I love children and I love working with them. Upon graduation from Boston College, I've had the opportunity of working in New York City public schools as a substitute teacher and at a privately owned nursery school in the Bronx as a part-time instructor. My experiences have been very rewarding thus far and have inspired me to want to continue along this path and seek further knowledge in the field. I can't even begin to describe the joyous feeling of knowing that I've touched the lives of the kids-- it is truly priceless. When kids pass tests, when kids say, "I get it," when kids come in and say, "Thanks. You're the best teacher I ever had," or "will we have you again" that means a lot. They make me laugh, they give me hugs, they cheer for my presence, they are observant, and most of them just need a little push. They give me nicknames, they miss me when I'm gone, they try so hard to do what I ask so much of the time. The most amazing feeling of all though is when the kids tell me they want to be just like me and teach just like me and are able to go in front of the class and teach others what I have just taught them. I have finally discovered what I am truly passionate about and am pursuing this passion by continuing my education so that I am able to fulfill my goal of being the best that anyone possible could be. This is what has driven me to want to go to Mercy and continue my education to become a teacher.…
