My Ncsy's Journey
Junior year was a big year for me. I switched schools, moved across the country to Palo Alto, California, and was living without my parents for the first time. I had to make friends all over again, and one of the ways I did that was by joining a Jewish youth group, NCSY. NCSY’s mission is to inspire Jewish teens by creating lots of events; some span for a weekend while others are for an hour weekly. One program in particular is called Latte and Learn where teens from the NCSY chapter go to a Starbucks for an hour, buy some drinks and learn a topic in Torah. Because my NCSY chapter consists of the large Northern California area, Latte and Learn has 2 locations so that members can go to the one that’s closer to them. With this still, the closest

In school, I am part of Ram Buddies. Ram Buddies is a program where students can assist other special needs students with homework and studying. In addition, they can assist with non-learning items such as crafts and play games. A Ram Buddy can sign up for time in homeroom. Additionally, students can sign up for field trips. A field trip takes place during school. In the past, I have gone to the mall, the YMCA, and Zoe’s Kitchen. A Student is assigned a special needs child to aid. On the school trips, the children learn how to communicate with strangers and obtain skills at the checkout. Ram Buddies is an excellent program to make friends and support students in…

My youth group has created a special place in my life. It provides me with Godly friends and a non-judging environment. After moving around so many times in my life it has become hard to make friends. I have been to many different youth groups and most of them I feel the need to pretend to be who I am not. Thankfully, at Rocky Bayou youth group I can drop my guard and I feel free to talk without feeling judged. Surprisingly enough, I have made multiple friends that are supportive, honest, and amusing. Rocky Bayou youth group makes me feel welcome and free to me without harsh worldly…

Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their…

y presence on the Hillsdale campus would be both unique, and mutually beneficial. The former, embedded in my very being, would, surely, draw attention to my individual character but, would also place me within a community that, is accepting, and full of like minded, individualized students. Therefore, since I feel, socially, I will fit in nicely at Hillsdale, I plan on pursuing many student run organizations and clubs, to become a part of vibrant Hillsdale culture. In particular, there are a few clubs I have already developed an interest for. Namely, The Creative Writhing Lab, The International Club, The Lyceum, and, perhaps, even The Chess Club- although my skills would certainly need improvement to serve as a competitive opponent.…

The NSCS has been inviting me to be a member because of my good grades at school, but because I never tried the scholarships before, and I never knew how it works, I did not join. My grants from financial aid and my salary is my foundation to support myself in tuition fees and books, but now that I can’t able to pay my tuition fees, even I am afraid of entering in this organization, I still did it. I finally accepted the nomination recently. So here I am, facing these weekly challenge questions just to get the scholarship that I need. I am honestly afraid to other members because they are really good compared to me that I am just trying to keep up my grades for my future and my family, but then I realized that joining in NSCS is not about getting…

A few blocks off the highway is a “home” called the Caroline House. Children and adults come daily to learn, play, and have a safe haven. With the National Charity League we are given the opportunity to help teach elementary and middle school students. Over the summer I chose to tutor at the Caroline House. Seeing the kids show up at 9 o’clock each and every day ready to learn made me very proud to see young students with such a…

A few years ago, I was just a freshman, who was intrigued by every aspect of my school. I was surprised to see that there is a hang out place called Senior hills, and that’s where most of the seniors hang out. There was also a specific room where most musically gifted kids hang out called the Band room. And lastly there is A quad, where kids love the color black, and could spend all day reading manga. As I wonder where I belong to in this huge melting pot, I met a group of older girls in my geometry class, Jordyn, Hannah, and Ally. Jordyn insisted that I should hang out with them, since I’m new and need guidance. They showed me to my classes, and taught me about spirit weeks and rally days. They said we should use spirit days to show school unity and look cuter than usual. One day, during lunch, when we were all dressed up as hippies in our trendy bohemian clothes chit chatting about what to wear for tomorrow spirit…

I blended easily with the other employees because most of them were college students as well. When I arrived at 8:00 a.m., the center only served a few children at a time; however, by 10:00 a.m. the room was filled every day to the max capacity (30 students). As a volunteer, I moreso played with the children, kept them on track for any activities that may have occurred, and even read them a story for storytime. Although I was not able to play a huge role amongst the students, I observed a variety of behaviors of both the students and their leaders that easily connected with the topics of this…

Throughout high school, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, Friends of Rachel and Desert Vista Peer Tutoring (DVPT). During my time as the secretary of Friends of Rachel, I managed all the attendance and arranged all meeting times for the club. I especially enjoyed being the receptionist for Friends of Rachel because through my tasks, I was able to develop my organizational and planning skills. Meanwhile, during the two days per week I spent at DVPT, I tutored hundreds of students in subjects ranging from mathematics, science, history, English, and Spanish. I, also, took on the role of receptionist for DVPT where I facilitated the entire tutoring center by pairing tutors and tutees, marking…

On April 11th, I went to Lafayette Recreation Center to teach 4th and 5th graders about the Lemonade Day. However, the beginning of our trip was not that satisfying. For some reasons, our bus was not prepared that our team had to wait almost an hour in the sun to figure out what we can do. Some students from our team decided to take a cab to arrive on time to keep our promise with children and the others had to go by deans’ cars. Because we were in a car, a small place, we not only discussed about the Lemonade Day but also was able to get to know each other deeply. Luckily, our team was able to Lafayette Recreation Center on time safely. As planned, our team was divided into four different small groups to teach children effectively. Four small groups rotated to teach different children with different materials. After teach children successfully, we were able to get back to school on a bus. In the bus, we discussed about what we liked or disliked about teaching children and how it differed from what we imagined.…

My faith journey has always been about growing in faith in order to assist others in the communities, countries or anywhere God’s desire will lead me to make a different in people lives. It has always been my goal or dream growing up in Liberia (West Africa) to work in the kingdom of God in order to convey the word of God to his people that are still in darkness. However, like I mentioned earlier, I was eager as a little boy to attend church with my uncle because he was the only family member that was attending church as well as a deacon of the church but my parents couldn’t allowed me to attend church with my uncle because Christianity was considered a (taboo). My uncle was from my mother side of the family and because of his faith in Christ; his entire household was treated or considered as outcast in the community. In any event, I moved into my uncle's house in order to be able to attend church with him and his family. After a while, the new reached my parents that I had been attending church with my uncle because my parents were living on the far. I vividly remembered this particular evening when my mother came from the farm and noticed that I was not at my house and I had been staying at my uncle house, she proceeded to my uncle’s house. Upon her arrival, we were sitting in group studying a bible and she went and took her seat calmly in one of the dining room chairs. At that point I knew something bad was going to occur so I went to my uncle at the end of our bible study and informed him not to allow me to go with my mother because she's going to something that I will regret because my mother was against of her children attending church. After having the conversation with my uncle, I heard my mother calling my uncle and informed him that she would like for she and I to leave at once because she was having lots of works on the farm that she needed assisting with and my uncle didn't have any…

The first night I was ever invited to join my youth group was during the fall of 2008. Sitting in youth group on Wednesday nights has taught me about God on a much deeper level and has helped me have a more personal connection with my Lord and Savior. Because I have been in youth for six years I have developed logos by having a well-rounded knowledge of the Bible, and because of my level of experience. My youth group knows that they can come to me if they are ever stressed or concerned about anything, or even if they have any questions. Additionally, Robert and Leslie know they can come to me if they need help with the youth or setting up a game. Every now and then, Leslie and Robert will plan a game night instead of teaching. It is during these nights that they usually pick me as a team captain because of my knowledge of the Bible, due to all my years in youth group.…
