Geography impacts the development of civilizations in several important ways. A group of peoples that find themselves in a land locked situation will not be able to take advantage of waterways, river and seas. With no ports, their ability to fish and use commerce by sea impacts their ability to interact with nations that have water as an asset. Nations that find themselves in rugged and mountainous regions will not be able to farm effectively. Deserts and frigid areas may cause people to migrate to more hospitable locations. Unfavorable geography will stifle those peoples that chose to remain in their circumstances Geographic conditions helped influenced the development of civilizations by allowing permanent settlements, irrigation for crops, and a constant water supply. This led to the increase in human population, which led to cities which resulted in civilizations. Some early river valley civilizations consist of: Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China.
Mesopotamia civilizations developed along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. This area can also be referred to as the Fertile Crescent. Egypt civilizations developed along the Nile River. The Sahara Desert and other geographic features protected Egypt from invasion, kept them isolated, and preserved culture. Indian civilizations developed along the Indus and Ganges River. India depended on seasonal monsoons for agriculture. India was protected and isolated from the Himalaya Mountains. Chinese civilizations developed along the Huang He and Yangtze Rivers. The Chinese were isolated and protected by the Himalaya Mountains and the Hindu Kush Mountains. This lead to the development of a traditional culture. The Chinese developed a ethnocentric view of the world. They thought they were superior to other cultures and viewed them as barbarians.

Geography was, and is, a very important part of civilization. Geography is important to our civilizations today for building, location, and transportation. Back in 2500-1500 BCE, when the Indus River Valley tribe lived, they built all of their towns on the Indus River. Water was a source of life. A lake could be a place to do laundry, to take a bath, and to drink out of. It was also important because it meant that the ground around it was well watered and great for growing crops. The Indus people lived on what is called the Indian sub-continent since that stretch of land juts out from the country of India. They had natural boundaries such as mountains, rivers, and dry plains like deserts.…

There were four main ancient River Valley civilizations: the Fertile Crescent of Mesopotamia, the Nile River of Egypt, the Indus River of India, and the Yellow River of China. These civilizations showed specific similarities and contrasting differences. Many of these differences and similarities showed up in the three categories of the technological advances, the types of government, and the geography of the civilization. Two civilizations that are very interesting to delve deeper into and study the contrasting societies are China and Egypt. Since China and Egypt were both isolated from the outside, they developed with a strong focus on technology and learning with strong governments to hold the nations together.…

Physical features and where people were located affected how civilizations developed in North America. According to Guns, Germs and Steel where civilizations were located I the world affected what food you had witch changed their way of life. Jared Diamond talks about how natives to New Guinea have access to the Saco tree while people in the Middle East had access to wheat and barley. According to diamond’s theory the Middle East thrived more quickly because wheat was easier to store and process. While the Saco tree took three days to process and only lasted for three days. Therefore they were spending all of their time providing food while civilizations of the Middle East had time to do more things like provide more permanent shelter and discover new things that help them progress. It seemed like some civilizations like New Guinea were at a halt from progressing anymore, and it didn’t change over thousands of years, while civilizations from the Middle East and surrounding civilizations flourished. Food relates to physical features because based on your elevation (like if you were in the mountains) the climate changes and based on the different climate the different food you find and the different food you can grow. For example if you were in the rainforest you would find the Saco tree like in New Guinea, and in the plains you would find wheat and barley like found in the Middle East. Based on my experience from playing thrive I can conclude that depending on where your civilization was on the map, you received different variations of food and resource surplus and amount of it. For example if you were in a dominant coast you can harvest two fish per meeple but in a secondary coast you could only harvest one fish per meeple. The more food you got per meeple the more meeples you have left to do other things like build homes, and discover things to further develop your civilization. I think this applies in real life also with Europe…

From the beginning of history to the year of 2013, geographic features have had great impacts on regions and civilizations. Geographic features include rivers, oceans, mountains, deserts, plains, seas, and forests, plus more. These features have affected the way civilizations interact with other civilizations or regions. Ancient Egypt was an example of this. The Nile River is a geographic feature that has led Egypt to be a very prosperous civilization and is the reason why it produced many of Egypt’s earliest civilizations. The geography of Japan caused the country to be isolated for a very long time and it has led the Japanese to be self sufficient.…

At the world level, energy consumption was cut down by 1.5% during 2009, for the first time since World War II.[1] Except in Asia and Middle East, consumptions were reduced in all the world regions. In OECD countries, accounting for 53% of the total, electricity demand scaled down by more than 4.5% in both Europe and North America while it shrank by above 7% in Japan. Electricity demand also dropped by more than 4.5% in CIS countries, driven by a large cut in Russian consumption. Conversely, in China and India (22% of the world's consumption), electricity consumption continued to rise at a strong pace (+6-7%) to meet energy needs related to high economic growth. In Middle…

Recently I lost someone very dear to me, my mom, and my grandma, although she was very loved by many. I can say that it seems like it is harder for my mom and grandma. They both loved her so much and you can tell it broke my mom some. She was sad today while looking through my great grandma’s things but it was worth everything to see all the stuff that she owns and read more about her life. Today we received the package of my great grandma’s things and journal’s about her life basically. So as I am sitting here procrastinating doing homework for my COLL 148 class and my BUSN 115 class I decided to write and this shall be the beginning of my long story hopefully one day my great grandchildren will be able to read about me as well. So I am 18 and a new college student. I recently graduated on June 14th, 2014, and I started college on July 7th, 2014. I can say that I have successfully almost finished my first session on college. It is going great I have in A in both classes and I think that is pretty good considering sometimes I really don’t do as well in school as I probably should. I guess I should also say that as of right now I am thinking about my trip next summer although we haven’t really paid for the tickets yet. So I guess you can say that I am not sure if I am really going or not going. Hopefully I can tell you soon. As you can see I am a girl who is kind of boy crazed right now and I hope that my children do not ever become as boy crazed or as girl crazed as their mother. So I am telling you now that if you read this and you know you were boy or girl crazed you got it from your mama. On June 18th, 2014 my whole life changed. I broke up with a guy I thought would be my whole world but it turns out he wasn’t he cheated on me and it broke my heart. I was very upset for a while and I think I took it out on my mom and on my family the ones that loved me the most and who never ever went away. I feel bad looking back on it because I hurt some…

This summer was really one of my best. It was so exciting and I loved every single moment of it. I made a lot of new friends and it was really enjoyable spending time with my old friends and them too. I went to my favorite camp in the whole world, got to see my best friends from South Carolina and spent a lot of time at the river. I jumped off settles bridge for the first time in front of so many people and completely busted my butt, I had a 9x4 inch bruise on the back of my thigh but it was still so worth it because I had the courage to jump before all the boys that were on the bridge with me. They were all quite impressed and a little embarrassed. I got to spend a lot of time with my boyfriend at the pool in my backyard and the pool in his backyard and we always had tons of friends over. It was a really busy summer, so I’ll tell you about some of my most memorable moments.…
