My Favourite Place
MY FAVOURITE PLACE IN MY CITY
I am in love with a place in my origin city. It is a special spot for me. It is called El Cejo. My father discovered it to me. He is keen on walking and I have inherited his hobby. Since I have been a child he has taken me to spend the afternoon hiking. This place is located quite near my house but with some steps you have the feeling you are not in Lorca. My region is extremely dry but this place is like an oasis in the desert.
To gain access to El Cejo you need to go up a sandy hill. Arriving to the hill the first thing you can find is an imposing castle. Its two towers have been policing the city for many centuries. It dates from the Muslim period when the city played a significant role. It was in the frontier of two important kingdoms in medieval times.
In one side of the castle there is a hidden path. This narrow path takes you to my paradise. The ground is red limestone with tiny pebbles. At the start you can glimpse the chain of mountains of the valley, several reservoirs and farmers working in the countryside. The range of colours of the crops spread over the landscape. Sometimes you can even smell distant bonfires.
There are abrupt slopes with cliffs joint by stone cement bridges. The bridges are secured with steel banisters, seeing as the height is considerable. You can find caves carved by the nature and decorated by prehistoric inhabitants with red and ochre drawings. Lizards and birds singing form the inhabitants of this wood. Nobody escapes the eye of the eagles that fly over their home. The pines stand in line like schoolchildren and drop their needles leaves when they are not green any more. The bushes accompany the trees, leaving pleasant fragrances like the rosemary. At the same time, the silence fills the place; sometimes it is interrupted by the barking of the dogs accompanying their owners in a relaxing walking.
The paths are sculpted by the footprints of bicycles and hikers. Moreover, there are streams

The contrast in scenery on this walk is superb. It begins with luxuriant woodland and sparkling streams, then the devastation of the lead mining period is encountered. Many of the paths were once used by miners as they trudged wearily to and from work.…

Where sunlight is dusted of the countryside that, like chalked satin, is about to form wings, Fan Kuan drew that place. He drew a place that even the tallest souls, dwarfed by the mountains, were unable to reach, their temples still throbbing with the dismasked energy of a cloudy sky. In the foreground there are a total of four donkeys and one human traveler, possibly the artist himself, moving through mountainous terrain in China’s Shanxi Region. They resemble the shadows of a similar procession moving somewhere out of sight, the shadows of their souls traveling beside them unseen yet wholly more solid than the material world. The perspective of this painting puts the viewer in the eye of a deity, something bigger than the sum of its parts gazed down at its own beauty, the living earth looking into perfect enlightenment. The lack of pigment making up the mists at the base of the background and the streams in the middle ground imply that nothingness and oneness are at the heart of this sublime natural scene. The black ink used in this painting, the lack of ink used to create certain elements in this painting, and the perspective of this painting, which puts the viewer in a god-like position, reflect the beauty of nature and the values of the glorious marriage between Nature and Buddhism called the Tao.…

Throughout the work there is a wide variety of naturalistic colors such as blue, purple, light brown, and green that is very rich in color and fresh. The lightness of the colors give the work a soft feeling. The warmth of the earthly tones helps the work look realistic. The cool blue sky is far away and gives the picture great depth. The canyon walls display fiery red and gold hues with a tint of brown. The one dimensional lines in the work vary in width, length, and direction that lead the eye around the composition. The horizontal lines used are thin and shape the tops and the edges of the canyons. The vertical line that separates the cloudless and vibrant sky from the colorful cliffs sculpted by water and wind is faint. In between the cliffs there is a river that stretches miles long and runs through the walls of the canyon as it flows from the walls of the canyons it gets narrower and narrower. The water is blue, darker in the shadows and more pale in the light, but still blue. The texture in the work is hard to detect, but the brushstrokes are simple and light that enhances the works concept.…

But instantly I remember again, and with every stride comes an inch more of pain, making me yearn for the cool water to heal my burnt steaks. Seagulls scout for food, hurtling towards the magma if only for a taste of someone’s forgotten potato chip. My primas have already beaten me to the sea. They heave their bluegreen buckets with mustard yellow handles into the water, plunging salty mixture onto the land to fill the handcrafted moat that will protect their beloved sand princess from malicious criminals. Of course no castle is fit for a princess without twisty shells in an array of a tints and hues. I snag a glimpse of the other seemingly perfect castles around us, built with care in creating the ideal landscape, truly an architect’s paradise, but none compare. We romp in the sand for what seems like only a few minutes before my Abuela calls my name. She hands me a meal suitable for the engineer that I converted to that day. Spicy peppers and tomatoes scatter around my mouth before the cooling lime sensation mixes with the cilantro and carne asada paired perfectly with a tortilla de maiz. I gulp it down before she can say, “Despacito mijita.” And like all devoted grandmothers, passes me a glistening grape Fanta before I voiced I was…

Towards the north there are the skyscraping mountains. Where the occasional tourist ventures to go hiking on the angelic, yet perilous, trails that spiral up the mountain. To the south I see a profound canyon that stretches from the east to the west. Legend has it, that once a year in the dead silence of the night, you can hear the rumbling of the canyon slowly expanding in size. When I look towards the east, way…

Some places have significant importance and many people work to protect those places of deep natural or open space value. In part II, “Speaking of Place”, from the anthology Wildbranch, the authors focus on personal connections and responses to particular places. These writers emphasize on sense of place, making their chosen spot quite different from any other place around, and also making their surroundings worth caring about. Nature is rapidly weakening in front of our eyes, and these places, frequently defined as cultural landscapes, play a massive roll on our environment; therefore, and taking this into consideration, the conservation of nature, in general, requires resources or a reserve for the welfare of people today and making sure…

Everything in the setting is natural, 'the deep green pool of the Salinas River' and 'a far rush of wind sounded and a gust drove through the tops of the trees like a wave. The language creates a feeling of light and brightness, particularly the "twinkling" water. The leaves are 'deep and so crisp' so that a lizard 'makes a great skittering' as it runs through them. The sycamore leaves turned up their silver sides, the brown, dry leaves on the ground scudded a few feet'. By these descriptions we have an image of a delightful place which is calm and peaceful almost like heaven.…

The painting depicts an outdoor environment, in the center a wide non-paved road with people, cattle and dogs walking on it. The road is contained in two rows of trees from both sides. While the trees are planted in the sides of the road, perspective and the natural growth leads the treetops to join on the upper part of the painting. Two thirds of the painting is reserved for the landscape but all of the interaction happens in the bottom third.…

The air was chilly, and a thin cloud of fog was drifting on the forest floor. The journey back thrilled me until I realized how uneventful it would be. The excitement of running forward to find the biggest trees and rocks had gone, because we were walking back the same way we came. Every turn brought a rock or giant tree I had already seen and climbed on. Thus, I took to trudging along ahead of everyone else, disappointed in the turn out of the day. Indulging myself in picking up colorful rocks was the only way that helped pass time. The day seemed to last forever as we hiked back, and I was becoming increasingly bored. It was at this point when I was sauntering along that I found a concealed shortcut. We were approaching a river, and there was a hidden trail off to the left that couldn’t be seen from the other direction. Interested, I decided to investigate this separate path. I emerged from around a bush to see a log stretching across the expanse of the river. My curiosity had paid off and I knew what to do next. Walking over, I questioned whether or not it was such a smart idea, then ignoring it continued. The log was covered in moss and appeared to be a little damp, making it a challenge I was determined to defeat. Shuffling forward, I slowly made my way across. I had almost reached the end when a shout emitted from behind me. My brother had finally caught up and…

A crisp winter morning and there was a frosty chill in the air. A sweet surrendering scent of the moist morning dew that cascades all around the sublime forest. The mixed cool autumn leaves from the tall trees lay scattered on the forest floor; they were in the motion of turning a brittle brown. There was the sound of shattered glass that emphasised the leaves being crunched, as if you were to step on them, pushing their papery remains deep into the brilliant white snow, which lined the ground like a fresh white cotton sheet. The passive and daunting forest has the appeal of a forgotten land, which has been lost in time. The isolated forest remained in a capsule, untouched by the destructive essence of man.…
