My Favorite TV Series: “SCANDAL”

“Scandal” is an American political thriller television series, created by Shonda Rhimes. It was first aired on ABC on April 5, 2012 (Wikipedia). Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), the main character, is based on Judy Smith, a press aide and crisis manager of the former Bush administration and founder of “Smith and company” (Wikipedia). I particularly liked this tv series because the story focuses around a strong female character who has a profound effect on “America’s most powerful man” - the US President.

The show takes place in Washington D.C and is about a crisis management firm which belongs to Olivia Pope. Olivia Pope works as lawyer who takes care of the public image of important and wealthy people. She used to work for the president side by side, directing his every move, but her love for him made her quit; however, she still helps the White house clear up each dirty secret they have. Throughout the tv series, many secrets are revealed of the white house, the president, and even the staff of Olivia Pope and Associates. The first season, was very vague. Each episode raised a question on who the members of the firm really were or what was actually going on. The questions that the show was raising and the viewers’ extreme curiosity, was most likely the reason why the show was so popular. Although the show was said to be “fictional” by the producers, it had a familiar story - the story of former US President Bill Clinton, and his affair with his secretary, Monica Lewinsky.

In the Second season, we came to understand who and what secret each member of the firm had. The Staff of Pope’s firm are: Stephen Finch, a man who thinks about marrying his current fiance, Harrison Wright, a litigator, Abby Whelan, an ex investigator, Huck Finn, an ex hacker of the CIA, and a new lawyer, Quin Perkins.

I love this tv series and admire Olivia Pope, because she is a strong and dedicated woman who does not let her feelings coincide

During Richard Nixon’s term of U.S Presidency, he was part of a series of scandals called The Watergate Scandals. The scandals began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office complex in Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1972. Investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and later by the Senate Watergate Committee, House Judiciary Committee and the press revealed that this burglary was one of many illegal activities authorized and carried out by Nixon's staff. They also revealed the immense scope of crimes and abuses, which included campaign fraud, political espionage and sabotage, illegal break-ins, improper tax audits, illegal wiretapping on a massive scale, and a secret slush fund laundered in Mexico to pay those who conducted these operations. This secret fund was also used as hush money to buy silence of the seven men who were indicted for the June 17 break-in.…

The first and most prominent point of discussion in determining Nixon's moral compass, or lack thereof, is that of the Watergate Scandal. The scandal started when five burglars were caught breaking into the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. which was serving as the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in 1972. During the congressional hearings about the break-in scandal, it was found that President Nixon had a tape-recording device installed in the Oval Office. The tapes were wanted by the special prosecutor in charge of the case. Nixon then had the prosecutor removed from his job. The next prosecutor also requested to see the tapes. A federal court judge then stepped in and stated that President Nixon had to hand over the tapes recordings. In response to this, the President released shortened and edited versions of the tapes. However, these weren’t good enough to meet the court order. The President was ordered by the United States District Court to hand over the complete tapes. The special prosecutor then requested the Supreme Court to hear the case and help settle the issue. Before the Supreme Court, Nixon’s lawyers argued that the tapes were protected by the President’s executive privilege and that the President can determine if they can be released to the public or to the other branches of government. However, the Department of Justice argued that Nixon could be using executive privilege to cover up his information about illegal activities. The Department of Justice also stated that this could be a…

The Watergate scandal had everything. Nixon disgraced the presidency by lying to the country and abusing his power and his committees were involved in illegal acts and a big cover up, all leading to little side roads of corruption and lies. Watergate is by far one of the worst presidential scandals in the history of the United States. In the story of Watergate, five burglars were found breaking into democratic offices at the Watergate complex in Washington DC. The break-in was passed off as just another burglary, but when the burglars were found to have connections with the CIA, questions were starting to be asked. Then when the phone number of Howard Hunt was found in one of the burglar's phone books, it made people think, why would one of the burglars have the phone number of one of the presidents men? When Watergate was uncovered, it revealed that the president was a liar and a cheat. The president lied to our country, lied about his involvement, concealed self incriminating evidence, abused his power, and planned…
