The Watergate Scandal
Imagine a President getting on National TV and lying to the public. Imagine that President then getting caught. This is the Scandal that caused the first ever resignation in United States History, Watergate. The Scandal involved approximately 70 people, but only 25 were actually found guilty. Many people who were found guilty were some of President Nixon’s top officials. Including G. Gordon Libby, John Dean, and H. R. Haldeman. The watergate scandal resulted in a loss of trust in the federal government, many people being found guilty and persecuted, and an array of schemes and cover ups.

Nixon’s entire administration did not think that there was a good chance for a re-election, so this motivated them to break into the watergate administration. They believed that they could gain information for the democratic party and then use what they learned to be one step ahead of their opponents. There were five burglars that were taken into custody at the watergate complex, where the burglary took place. After being searched many of the burglars had tremendous amounts of cash in their possession. Most of this cash was able to be traced back to “Nixon’s Committee for the Re-election of the presidency.” Eighty percent of the burglars who were arrested had worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in previous years. On a Later date, The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found out that the burglary was the second of two break ins at the watergate complex. Both were able to be traced back to Richard Nixon and “Nixon’s Committee for the Re-election of the presidency.” One of the biggest ways that Richard Nixon was involved with the watergate scandal was the many schemes he used to try and cover up the entire …show more content…
But this doesn’t even scratch the surface of the multiple attempt at the cover-up of the entire scandal. Nixon heard about the arrest and immediately called a meeting with his chief of staff, H.L. Haldeman and started the cover
