During the very first scene two important birds appear: "A green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, kept repeating over and over: Allez vous-en! Allez vous-en! Sapristi! That's all right! He could speak a little Spanish, and also a language which nobody understood, unless it was the mocking-bird that hung on the other side of the door, whistling his fluty notes out upon the breeze with maddening persistence” (page 1). This green and yellow parrot represents Edna who is caged at that moment of the novel. From this fragment we can also guess that the parrot is saying in French ‘Go away, go away! For God’s sake!’ meaning the eventual desire of Edna to ‘go away’ from the society’s cage. Just like the parrot, Edna also speaks “a language which nobody understood”, meaning that she tries to show others her idea of freedom but she fails. The second bird is the mocking-bird that is also caged and it represents Mademoiselle Reisz. The mocking-bird is the only one who can understand the parrot’s Spanish and at the same time Mademoiselle Reisz is the only one who’s capable of understanding Edna’s believes.…

As with almost all "Christian" holidays, Easter has a secular side as well. The dichotomous nature of Easter and its symbols, however, is not necessarily a modern fabrication. Easter has always had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival. It was co-opted by Christian missionaries starting in the second century CE. Easter must be celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March 22 and April 25.…

The bird represent the joyful life Mrs. Wright wants and use to have, and for Mr. Wright it represents his cruelty and abuse. The bird sings and provides warmth and joy for Mrs. Wright. The bird is a sign of cheerfulness in a bleary home. Mrs Hale states, "He didn't drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him--." She stopped, shivered a little. "Like a raw wind that gets to the bone." Mr. Wright strangles the bird, once again neglecting his wife, trapping his wife in a bleary place, and being cruel and abusive.…

I have always been drawn to music. As a child, I had a fond attachment to music. Music was always being played in my household, whether it was on the radio, the television, or through an instrument. Music has always given form to my feelings. As a child I remember I would turn on the radio, sit on my bed and just listen to random music stations. Although I never had dreams of becoming a singer, dancer or any sort of musician, I have always been fascinated by music. I have been captivated by rhythm and melody since the days my mother would sing me to sleep.…

I come from a family with a rich background in music. I don’t know a single family member that can’t play at least one instrument or doesn’t know how to read a piece of sheet music. When I was very young my mother would play music for me and sing to me. My father would also play the drums very loudly so the entire neighborhood could hear. Due to the fact that I was brought up around so much talent and music appreciation, naturally I decided that I wanted music to be a large part in my life forever and I want to be able to share it with the world. When I was in elementary school I decided to join the choir. This was a big moment for me because music was what made me want to get up and live my life, it was always something to look forward to.…

Throughout the poem, the reader is able to see how the boys’ lives are difficult and lonely due to poverty. However, as they watch the pigeons fly away, the tone becomes hopeful. Flores uses specific words, such as “glide” on line 13, “fly” on line 19, and “soar” on line 15, to cultivate a sense of hope, particularly for the young boys watching the birds fly off. One often associates words such as “glide” and “soar” with freedom and happiness. Flores’ positive words are a reflection of what the boys are thinking as they watch the pigeons fly away. The reader can assume that the boys hope to do the same someday – fly beyond their concrete barrio. Additionally, Flores notes on lines 16 through 17 that the pigeons glide and soar beyond the “labyrinths of / foodstamps...loneliness...and want.” The birds not only escape the neighborhood, but also the difficulties the boys face due to their poverty……
