Throughout history there have been many amazing and emotional protest songs that have brought people together with the goal of creating a change in society. An example of one of those songs is the song “Be Free” by J. Cole. Throughout the live performance of the song, “Be Free”, the artist J. Cole shows his emotion about what it is he is singing about. The song was a very effective and popular protest song because of the meaning of the song, the lyrics in the song, and that fact that it helped bring people who were feeling discriminated against, in order to create a social change in society and the world. The meaning behind the song is that the african american community was facing a lot of discrimination and brutality from the police. There were many cases of police brutality towards African Americans, but the one that made the meaning behind the song “Be Free” was the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. After the death of Michael Brown, J.Cole was quick to express his concern with the song. J. Cole “released “Be Free” six days after Mike Brown’s death. He joins a growing number of recording artists providing a soundtrack for the Black Lives Matter Movement” (Anderson 16). It is clear that J. Cole was heavily affected by the death of Mike Brown, and he felt that it was important to express the frustration he and many others had when it came to police brutality and discrimination.
