The song “A Country Boy Can Survive” originally written by Hank Williams, Jr and the cover by kid Rock tells a story about how a man becoming good friends with a New York City businessman. Between the two, they have different backgrounds, but set aside their differences; they become good friends and exchange gifts with each other. When the song takes a turn for the worst, the businessman is killed by a man with a switchblade knife for only $43. The song also describes the skills he has to survive and overcome anything; the lyrics say, “I can plow a field all day long, I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn, we make our own whiskey, and our own smoke too, ain’t too many things these ole boys can’t do, we grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine.” The assets to survive mentioned by the writer Mr. Williams Jr; are basic things you need to survive living in the country. Hank Williams Jr tone and attitude in the song were a feeling of pride being a country boy. Also his specific diction to tell the story of his friend he had come close to but is killed describes his feelings about the guy who killed him. His tone in the song gives a serious vibe through the entire song. Hank encourages that having outdoor skills will be helpful for survival. After Mr. Williams many great accomplishments from the song, Kid rock came out with his cover of Hank Williams Jr.'s "A Country Boy Can Survive". Kid rock was described as being "heavy metal-leaning" but in this case he took the country song and made it a more rock upbeat country song. The society of people who enjoyed rock in the late 1900’s enjoyed kid rocks new version. As both songs got huge hits creating great criteria- originality, engage listener/emotional impact, and meaning from the songs. Comparing the two will make you wonder whose version is better now. Between Hank Williams Jr and Kid Rock, the song “A Country Boy Can Survive”, play different types of genre of music. Hank Williams Jr’s version has an old country music vibe to the song. Mr. Williams establishes a beat and volume of his voice to attract the audience’s attention. His soft tone of voice grabs the ears of the audience to listen closer to the words being told within the lyrics. The beat through the song is a steady country rhythm; also the way the song is played brings a calm and relaxed emotion. Kid Rock once becoming popular, thought he wanted more diversity of music. He ranges from true rock, to rap, to even samples of traditional country music. In an era where pop and electronic music have become so popular, one man is trying to break the barriers and make music that has feeling and comes from the heart. Kid Rock took a challenge on trying to do a cover on Mr. Williams Jr’s song “A Country Boy Can Survive” and succeeded with the cover. Kid rock being known to be a more rock n roll singer, surprised the view and attention of his audience with his new version. Between Mr. Williams Jr and Kid Rocks version created many differences from the two. Kid’s version was a rock rhythm that established louder and more upbeat tones from the instruments being played. The way he sung the lyrics didn’t grab the attention as much from the original, but with the new upbeat vibe, this created the listeners to have a different change of mood set.
