Museum Critique
At the cooper Hewitt museum, a few pieces stood out to me in the Scarps and Kravis exhibits.
On the first floor of the Cooper Hewitt museum, there is the “Scraps: Fashion, Textiles and Creative Rescue” exhibit. The exhibit reveals the work done by three designers; Luisa Cevese, Christina Kim, and Reiko Sudo. I truly enjoyed this exhibit, because it contained fabrics, fashion, and textiles, which are all intriguing to me. As a fashion designer, I was very interested in the textures and patterns incorporated into these recycled fabric. Some of the recycled materials turned into art that stood out to me were Textile and Table Mat (Metallic Patched). Textile is designed by Reiko Sudo and was made in 2008. It is a fabric made out of dobby-woven

Kravis II, I was very shocked and stunned throughout the experience. The pieces that were presented were beautiful, out of the ordinary, and simply original. I enjoyed the furniture pieces the most, because they looked so modern, but were made in the past. I also admire the electronics because of their retro-vintage appearance. Some of my favorite pieces in the exhibit were Armchair, Chaise Longue, 4743 Stereo Cabinet, Embryo Chair, RCA Victor special phonograph, and Divisumma 18 calculator. Made in 1976, the Armchair was designed by Shiro Kuramata and made out of assembled laminated plate glass. At first glance, the chair looks like it was made in the 2000s because it looks modern, but to my surprise it was made in 1976. This piece is something I would purchase in an apartment or house, for furniture, because it is functional art, it’s intriguing and can probably be a conversation starter for people who come to your apartment or house. I mean can you just imagine, sitting on a glass chair? The Chaise Longue is another chair that is an eye catcher. The Chaise Longue chair was designed by Edward D. Stone, and is dated back to 1950-52. The material is said to be woven oak stripes, and the legs of the chair is made out of a wood material as well. When I walk into the exhibit, the longue chair grabbed my attention, with its attractive basket like woven base and rich color. I imagined the chair being places outside a house in the back yard. It has masculine and feminine features, the oak wood being masculine feature and he chair’s curves being the feminine feature. I would totally purchase this chair, if it was on the

I found out about this collection through my mother who went to the museum over the summer. I went along with her, but did not pay much attention to anything in particular. When I found out about this cultural event paper for humanities, I was just going to see a play, or go with one of my friends from class when they were going to start their paper. But it was when we started to learn about the renaissance, I remembered a few things from the Morse Museum that reminded me about this time period. I knew, according to the museum layout that these pieces were part of the permanent exhibit and would be in the same place if I were to go back and visit. After realizing this, I thought it would be difficult to see and play knowing I would have to relate it to something in class; and also because I do not enjoy plays very much. Art on the other hand, especially the art of Tiffany, peaked my interest because it was so unique and I’ve never seen anything like it before.…

The silver, jewel incrusted Viking- themed vase designed by George Paulding Farnham for Tiffany & Co., especially for the Pan American Exposition of 1901 in Buffalo, New York stands alone in a centrally located glass case in the American Silver Gallery located on the fourth floor of the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. Only standing eight inches high, the intricate details of the vase draws the viewer in and keeps them there as the eye runs over the delicate scroll and serpentine patterns of silverwork, colorful enameling and strategically placed garnets and citrines.…

The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 damaged the old de Young museum building located in Golden Gate Park and uncovered severe seismic flaws in the building and hence a comprehensive plan to rebuild the building in stages was overtaken to make the de Young museum up to date. In January 1999 the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron were chosen to rebuild the De young museum, due to their willingness to engage in an extended process of architectural design and also because their prior work demonstrated a drive to explore new building solutions for each client. Each of Herzog & de Meuron’s prior buildings were known for their strikingly different façade treatments and the use of uncommon materials, textures and patterns. “The museum wanted an architectural statement that would be unique to its vision, its collections, and its site in the Golden Gate Park”. (Deborah Frieden, De Young project Director)…

McNeil Museum of Art is located in Universal City, which has a large metropolitan population of 2.5 million residents. In they year 2004, they recorded their 3rd annual loss of ($383,715); totaling ($794,086) in the past 3 years. They have also depleted their savings and the interest they make on investments is declining with no positive sights in the near future. The museum makes 43% of their $6,657,644 revenue from the 17,634 membership dues charged to personal and corporate accounts. The amount of memberships has been down for the past 5 years. The memberships cost $854,461 plus extract $1,057,800 from their income due to benefits given to members. 80% of membership revenues come from personal accounts, the other 20% comes from corporate accounts. 475 association members volunteer, which saves the museum a substantial amount of operations cost that they do not have to pay employees. McNeil does not charge the public for museum visits, and therefore all other revenue is made by contributions, grants, Fannel County, investments, and auxiliary activities. The museum could potentially have over 2.5 million visits each year if all members of Fannel County attended at least once; however, they are only attracted 628,472 attendants in the year 2004. McNeil Museum of Art’s image is often criticized for only being an exclusive parking and lunching attraction for the rich members. The museum also faces a major awareness issues; director of development and community affairs, Ashley Mercer, claims that people don’t even know what the museum is or the things that it offers. They promote the awareness through publications, press releases, and other ways of informing the public; and although awareness is such an issue, Mercer clearly stated that the Board of Trustees would not allow them to increase these costs in the year 2005, which was $594,067 in 2004, an increase of 31% from 2003. Also, there are many monetary decisions that the company can make to fix their…

I chose to do my review project in “The High Museum”, in Atlanta GA. It was found in 1905 and its very first name was Atlanta Art Association. Also it is the one of the most visited art museum in the world. While, visiting High museum, I was drawn to two particular pieces from two very different artists. The Chest and drawers by Teyo Remy, gained my attention because of creative design and deep meaning. My other favorite piece is “The beginning of Life in the Yellow Jungle”, by Thorton Dial. I will be comparing two artist from Modern and Contemporary Art period.…

The decorative pieces of art were something I really was not expecting. When we talked about it in class I was assuming they would be regular sculptures or something of that nature. I never pictured beautiful furniture or hand crafted pottery. I honestly was not aware that things along those lines were even considered pieces of artwork until this trip.…

East Indian Sculpture and Baroque sculpture: How are they different and how are they similar? After circling the museum for an hour, bouncing from security guard to security guard (trying to find my way to the baroque sculptures) I was finally able to answer that question. The two examples I chose were "Nessus and Dejanira" from the Baroque period and "Loving Couple" from Eastern India. The reason I chose these two specifically is because they both involved a man and a woman, making it more interesting for comparing and contrasting. I also chose five additional pieces to discuss later in my paper.…

The first thought that came to mind when looking into Robin and Lucienne Day’s work was how their designs, created 60 years ago were still so very appealing to today’s modern society. As an art student, I find the art that we learn about in class very interesting because it is art that I would never be interested in, but yet after learning the details I enjoy them. Although I don’t mind learning art through power points, I find physically looking at art more enjoyable. Getting the whole experience of physical artwork is a more exciting way to learn and catches my interest more, which is why I was so excited to visit a new museum and look at some art. For this assignment I decided to go to the LACMA museum. I have been to many museums before, but I have not visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art yet so I was very excited. I find a lot of art very fascinating, but I am more interested in the more contemporary and modern arts. I am a design major so I was drawn to the sculptural art pieces that were displayed outside the building. One piece in particular that I found very beautiful and fascinating was an outside display entitled “Urban Light”.…

In “Willy Covari (Brazzaville)” photographer Daniele Tamagni shows a very interesting character in the streets on Brazzaville, the capitol city of the Republic of the Congo. Tamagni created a series of images all depicting men in Brazzaville who dress up in eccentric clothes that contrast the grey poverty stricken world they live in. The photo itself is very aesthetically pleasing. The photo shows a crowded street, with decrepit buildings and people in regular every day attire. The man who is the subject of the photo however, is dressed in a Flamingo-Pink Suit, matching shoes, and a red cap. He has a certain pompous walk to him, with his fresh clothes and his thick cigar. He is part of a group of men known as Sapeurs, who dress like kings but live in poverty. Their story mimics the picture itself, which is a comparison of excessive wealth and devastating poverty.…

Going for the first time to the M.H. de Young Museum, in San Francisco was a wonderful experience for me. I learned about and saw amazing art that I had never seen before. It was a whole different feeling walking into the museum; everything looked so beautiful and different from what I was expecting to see. The three pieces of art that caught my eye as soon as I looked at them were the First Theme by Burgoyne Diller, Blue point by Kate Shepherd, and most of all The Coming And going by David Salle. This trip was a great experience for me and I got to learn and see new things.…
