Few people in this world are true champions. It is difficult to become a champion because the traits one must possess are hard to come by. A champion works hard and fights for what is right. A champion overcomes and perseveres. These are a rendered useless without the binding power confidence and strength. Without confidence champions would shy away from confrontation. Without strength they could not win against opponents. Strength and confidence work together like fuel on a fire. As one grows so does the other. Theseus if any of the Greek Mythology heroes embodies these two characteristics the greatest. He has the confidence to take the harder path knowing that he will defeat anyone who opposes him. He is also shown as confident and cocky because “he intended to try to kill the Minotaur” (Ovid). The idea that one could defeat this beast takes much confidence. Ali shows this in a quote that claims “ I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was” which exemplifies that not only was he confident but he thought he was the best (Ali). In addition when he said “ If you ever dream of beating me you better wake up and apologize” one can infer that he thinks of himself and his abilities quite highly (Ali). Confidence was a very important quality in the Greeks image of a hero because they thought of the meek as weak.
Muhammad Ali and Theseus are both great heroes whether it be from the perspective of an Ancient Greek or a modern day citizen. Strength and confidence are at the forefront of what makes these heroes who they are. These two traits clearly show power and influence as many heroes of Greek mythology and champions in our world have them.
