Mozart Symphony 4
My listening selection that I chose from the classical era was ¬¬¬Mozart’s Symphony #40 in G Minor K 550. This piece was composed in 1788. The tempo of this piece is molto allegro and the rhythms are fairly simple. Syncopation is used in this piece as well with homophonic texture. The piece is mainly quite with development to a louder section in the middle, but ends softly. The exposition of the piece demonstrates the quietness that is seen, but contains a small louder section. The recapitulation is very similar to how the exposition is composed. This piece is one of Wagner’s best known pieces and has created a lasting influence on music. The piece was written in 1856, but first performed in 1870. This is a piece that has been used in modern day movie production such as Watchmen, Apocalypse Now, and Star Wars. This piece of work has also had other influence modern day music as well. “You spin Me Round (Like a Record)” by Dead or Alive based the chords on this piece of music. It contains a moderate allegro tempo and with homophonic texture. It has dramatic contrasts and shifts in major and minor as well. Wagner utilized dissonant harmonies to create tension and instability in the piece. It leaves listeners wanting resolution from the piece. Wagner created an orchestra featuring brass instruments to recreate dramatic battle cries and to reinforce the riding into war theme/tone. This piece also reminds me of cowboys riding in the plains from old western movies. I also find it interesting that this piece is also used for the regimental quick march of British Parachute Regiment. The ride has left a fairly significant impact on modern culture for a musical piece. This is a piece that people might not know the name or the composer, but would be able to easily identify where they have heard it before.
