Monte Cristo Symbolism
“Fate is like a strange, unpopular, restaurant filled with odd little waiters who bring you things you will never ask for and don’t always like.” - Lemony Snicket, author. This quote compares fate to a restaurant that provides food without choice, even when it is something people don’t like. In Viva la Vida and The Count of Monte Cristo, the writer’ use of symbolism and imagery reveals the idea that fate allows people to gain or lose power because it is an unstable force. Symbols are presented in The Count of Monte Cristo and Viva la Vida to convey that fate can be changed by actions. Unpredicted incidents can happen with the kindest of them all, which came true with Dantes in The Count of Monte Cristo, “The unexpected appearance of this dreaded prison, with its centuries-old tradition of terror, produced the same effect on Dantes as the sight of the gallows on the man condemned to death” (Dumas 32). The description that Dumas used shows that Dantes fate is changed because of the letter that Danglars, Fernand, and Villefort was involved in. Dantes fate now lies in the hands of God to determine what happens to Dantes in prison. The unexpected occurrence for Dantes happened when Villefort ordered his men to move Dantes to Chateau d’if. Same in Viva la Vida, “Just like a puppet on a lonely string” (Coldplay 31). This comparison is an example of imagery because it shows how he is controlled by others. This relates to fate because he probably saw himself as a powerful man, but since he is now controlled by others it has changed his fate. The unexpected occurrence for the king was being overruled by others and losing all his power. All in all, fate cannot be changed, so if suffering is someone's fate, they are destined to suffer.Even if they are able to escape suffering now, they will face it later.
