Music and Genres

(Listening)

INTRODUCTION
Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its common elements are pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music can be divided into genres and subgenres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to individual interpretation, and occasionally controversial. And a music genre is a conventional category that identifies pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. Basic music genres include the following: Blues, Classical, Country, Jazz, Pop, Rap, Reggae, Rhythm & Blues, Rock, and Techno. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
Cognitive: acquire the definition of each music genres, also to identify their difference by listening. Affective: value the different genres, and will appreciate how distinctive and creative are the sounds of each genre. Psychomotor: differentiate the genres.

Activity 1: Stock Knowledge and More Power!
Directions: do you still have stock knowledge? Or it is out of stock..? In this activity, you are to write all your background knowledge about the genres of music in the SK table, and on the MP table will be the place where you are to put what you wanted to learn in the topic. SK| MP|

Activity 2: Guess what?
Directions:
1. The class will be grouped into three and queue
2. The instructor will play 20 music instrumentals with different genres. 3. The answers must be written at the board.
4. The first person in the line will guess what music genre is playing. After, go back to the group and the next person will guess, and so on.

5. In 10 seconds, the group’s answers will be locked and cannot be erase. 6. Coaching is cheating; therefore, answers will not be accepted if someone coached. CHOICES:

Activity 3: Discuss and Report
Directions: with the same group members you will be given 2 different genres to discuss in the class. Group1 | Group2| Group3| Group4| Group5|
Blues and Techno| Classical and Rock | R&B and Country| Jazz and Reggae | Pop and Rock |

Activity 4: the Riff-Off Battle!
Directions:
1. With the same group, the instructor will give a genre as a theme. 2. Any of the group will sing with the genre that has been chosen. 3. The other group will insert another song but with the same word that can be noticed to the latter song. 4. If a group will sing a song that has been sung and inserted a word which doesn’t match to the inserted line will be eliminated. 5. Ready? START!
