Beowulf Compared to a Modern-Day Hero

Every person considers another individual a “hero” at one point of his or her life, but what truly is a “hero”? There are numerous definitions for what a hero is; some are believed to possess super powers, others to wear capes, or simply be an ordinary individual who gathered enough endurance for a significant situation. In fact, we have seen countless portrayals of heroism throughout literature and film, most notably by the extremely popular characters, Beowulf and Mulan. The definitions of what a hero is may vary; specifically for Beowulf and Mulan. These specific characters are recognized as “heroes” because of their constant manifest of loyalty, determination, and strength. Although these characters
Beowulf sees himself as undefeatable when fighting against his enemies; in fact he states he will not “hide behind some broad linden shield” (171-172), this evidently shows Beowulf’s arrogance and lack of humility. Mulan on the other hand, is actually a very humble character; she refuses to be the Chinese Emperor’s adviser, a very prestige position, because she wants to return to her family instead. Another difference between both characters is the fact that Beowulf is a “hero”, while Mulan is a “heroine”. Although it may not seem as a huge contrast, Mulan is known as a “heroine” because she is a female character who saves other individuals, as opposed to Beowulf who is a “hero”. Occasionally, “heroines” like Mulan are given less powerful characteristics because they are female, because of this Beowulf clearly was developed as a more violent character. Given these points, Beowulf and Mulan have multiple similarities and differences this can be due to the fact that their characters and stories were written in different eras.
