Miriam Morris
My name is Miriam Morris; I am the eldest of four children. My family has moved more than what most do in their entire lifetime. I have lived in Illinois, Texas, Nebraska, and for the last nearly seven years we have called North Carolina home. My family is a culturally mixed family; my father comes from a small coal mining community that has Irish, German and English immigrant backgrounds. My mother is a first generation Mexican American with rich Mexican traditions that are still influential in our lives. Two of the core values that my parents have instilled in their children have been those of sacrifice and personal responsibility. My parents worked opposing shifts so that there was always one parent present with their kids at home. My father

    1. When I was four years old my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. My life changed completely after her diagnosis. My dad abandoned us. We could no longer afford to live by ourselves, since my mother could not work. She was disabled from her neck down. Immediately, she was hospitalized. A medical social worker carefully explained her disease so that we could better understand it. She was kind and patient with our Spanish only speaking family. Due to my mother’s health we were compelled to move in with my aunt. She raised me as if I was her own. During my childhood money was tight. My uncle would work two jobs just to make ends meet. My aunt would take us to a catholic center where social workers would provide us with food, gift cards…

For this assignment I interviewed Omar Bretado. He is a 25-year-old male who migrated to the United States with his family at the age of twelve. He and his family, like most immigrant families, came to the United States in hopes of a better future. Omar and his family migrated from Zacatecas, Mexico to Dallas, Texas. Omar tells me that he is glad that he was given such a wonderful opportunity when he came here. In Mexico, he lived with his three siblings, parents, grandparents, and a few aunts and uncles. The house was divided into three areas so that everyone could have a bit of privacy. I decided to interview Omar because he was able to shed some light on the differences he experienced between Mexico and the United States. Only having been here half of his life he has accomplished many things. He has finished his education, gotten a well-paid job, and has become a citizen of the United States. Although Omar had fun living in Mexico, he says that he would not change anything in his life. He is grateful for the time he was able to be in his home country and for the cultural that was instilled upon him all of his life.…

June Morrissey is the daughter of Marie's sister: half-Lazarre, half-Morrissey from the Pillager line, wife of Gordie Kashpaw, mother of King Kashpaw and Lipsha Morrissey. June is first adopted by Marie Kashpaw, but later is raised by Eli Kashpaw the bachelor of the family. June runs away from Gordie and King, returns several times only to leave again. June dies in the first chapter. Love Medicine begins with June Morrisey freezing to death on her way home to the reservation. Although she dies at the beginning, the figure of June holds the novel together. The story begins with June Kashpaw, whose death in the opening chapter haunts this book. Moving from man to man, tired beyond her years, June abandons her latest one-night stand as he sleeps in his car on the cold North Dakota plains. She stands alone under the night sky and begins to walk. A woman who has seen everything and has really come to the very end of her despair begins to walk toward home, not knowing that she is going to pass into an Easter blizzard. And that the purest part of her is going to continue going home, no matter what is in her way. I think that she is one of the most complex, but intriguing characters. Although June dies in the first chapter of Love Medicine, she remains a strong presence throughout the book as her family reflects on her life, death, and strange beginning. June has that connection to the land and the spirits within it that some of her other relatives were lacking. She was raised on the land and that gave her a stronger connection with Earth. It was because of that connection that she would have felt that something was about to happen. I think June knew that she would never make it home alive, but rather she pushed forward knowing that she would make it home a different way. By moving toward her fate June is able to stop her own suffering and become one with the land she loves so much. The "pure and…

Growing up in a community that is mostly Hispanic creates a type of shield, not allowing for different cultures or ethnicity to diversify the community. A Hispanic family living in such an isolated community takes a toll on the way we view the world. This environment has indulged my curiosity. Being the second youngest sibling of my family of seven has allowed me to learn from my older brothers, and have the privilege to be a leader to my little brother and serve as a role model to him. Though none of my family members went to college, and my parent’s highest education being a high school diploma, it hasn’t discouraged me to follow their footsteps, but rather give the encouragement to dedicate myself to be the first generation and in my whole…

I was born in the suburbs of the Bronx and raised in the Brooklyn, New York. At a young age, I never understood the amount of hard work my parents had gone through to raise me and give me a great life I have today. They emigrated from South Korea to this country in hopes of the American dream. They had their definition of the American dream as working hard to become successful. They were strong believers in that hard work would result in great results and rewards. My parents took huge sacrifices in order to make it to this great nation. They had left their families, their jobs, and their culture to start a new life. My father went from being a chemical engineer to making a small living as a delivery man for a clothing company while my mother worked as nurse in a small clinic in downtown Brooklyn. We didn’t live in the best of neighborhoods, but it was sufficient enough to provide shelter and food. It took a lot of pain and long hours for my parents to provide for me and they have taught me the most crucial life lessons. They told me that the most important lesson is life is to always put other people before you. They explained how if you are always there to help others and be there for another person, they will return the favor to you. This helped shaped my identity as to be a caring person who is always willing to help out those in need. Throughout the rest of my life, I would encounter this life lessons…

I knew I was different, and that fact hung like a cloud over my time at school. My classmates were proud of their European heritages and their families. They spoke of their parents’ established, white collar careers, while my father was a clerk at the local grocery store chain, and newspaper delivery man in the early mornings. They spoke of their family legacies, and their family trees reaching into the 1600s. I was the grandchild of an woman who had come to America without much assurance that she could establish a better future for her children. They spoke of their parents’ college educations and travels all over the world. My father had finished high school in…

My Name is april june and I am 21 years old. I was born right at the crack of dawn on September 3rd 1992 in MA. Currently, I still live in Worcester just up the block from Worcester State University. I attend Quinsigamond Community College and at the moment I am in General Studies taking general classes to help get my GPA up until I figure out what I would like to do for the rest of my life. I live in a pretty averaged size apartment with just my mother Angel. I am the “baby” of two older sisters named Danielle and Amanda. One of them just recently getting engaged and ready to start her life, and the other one has three children the youngest being one years old. My mother and father separated when I was about two years old so I was raised by my mother, father and step mother while growing up. Both of my parents completed high school and never went to college so they were not the type of parents who pushed college careers nor did they have any sort of fund for us to be able to go. Of course after high school when I decided to attend college, they are very proud and supportive for me to finish. When I began college, my mom also went back to college after seeing me and my sister do it, and she got a health and human service degree at the age of 40. My parents came from middle class families and on my mothers side, very few of my family members were college graduates. We often had no spending money or even good running vehicles but they always gave us love and we were happy with all of the small things we had. My parents used the permissive parenting style, at least for me and my sister; they never really used any type of punishments. They would tell us we were grounded from something but the next day we would be doing the things we were grounded from. We were always nurtured and my parents were easy t...…

I am a Mexican immigrant and as most immigrants, I had to trade all I had in exchange for the pursuit of the American dream. I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico; However, I was raised in a small rural area in the south of Zacatecas, Mexico where agriculture and livestock rising where the main economic activities. My family owned a small farm where we used to produce corn, beans, sugar cane, and other types of produce; we processed the corn and used it as food for the livestock. Since I was a kid, I had to help my parents with the farm, and attend school at the same time. The schools that I attended were a rudimentary rural school that consisted of a couple of classrooms and at most two teachers for the school. Even though these schools were less than ideal, the teacher's quality and the student's passion to learn created an atmosphere of mutual respect and healthy…

At two years old, my family divided itself. My brother and I were forced to live out of our duffle bags and travel back and forth from our mom and dad’s house. This division created confusion for my brother and me. Both my father and mother were always supportive and offered as much help as they could. Thirteen years later, my mother was married and pregnant with my twin brothers to be. This is when my love for the idea of being a teacher was introduced. My brothers have brought out my motherly instincts earlier than the average teenager. Watching them grow up and watching my mother raise them selflessly, taught me that giving is more important than receiving.…
