What Really Triggers Overeating ?
Over eating refers to a long term consumption of excessive food; this may also be known as an eating disorder. Over eating is mainly caused by not being in control of yourself whereas eating becomes a habit of being unable to establish hunger or fullness. The consequences of overeating leads to obesity and can also lead to symptoms of binge eating disorder, bulimia or hyperalimentation. It is clear that overeating triggers situations and emotions to eat in larger amounts than usual. This is evident, because experts (Mayo Clinic) say that 75% of people excessively eat due to stress, appetite and mindless eating. Most Canadians and Americans don't bother eating healthy, but what they don't realize is the trouble there getting them into, that’s why eating plenty of foods is great as long as we maintain are eating habits and carefully watch are calories so we stay active and fit.
As humans we may eat for many reasons and one of the main motives is having an appetite. When feeling hungry our cognitive system sends signals which create a desire to eat for example appetite leads us exclaiming “That looks good enough to eat”. This behaviour intakes energy to feel hungry; when our stress levels increase our intake of food also increases due to cravings. Appetite regulations may lead to weight gain or even appetite problems that may be caused by medications or even psychological issues. Appetite causes weight gain, but that is just the beginning. Being overweight can lead to chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and cancer. What actually causes hunger and appetite is the imbalance of hormones; for example while watching TV, say The Food Network; show plenty of good appetizing food which drives your mind and stomach crazy those are acids that create the inequality of hormones which triggers another acid called Ghrelin. Ghrelin causes hunger, thus appetite is triggered by foods that consist high sugar and fat content. Solving the problem of overeating could be quite complex, because people who go on diets eat foods that contain fruits, whole wheat’s and vegetables. This helps to stabilize hunger and appetite. Knowing what, how and when to eat is the most important state when learning to control yourself from overeating.
Speaking of emotional eating, people can get into situations that could have a positive or negative reinforcement towards our eating habits. As a matter of fact, 75% of people who overeat have dealt with many undesirable feelings. People’s emotions are very delicate and almost always use food to help comfort themselves. There are three main reasons that cause people to overeat; emotional, situational, and physiological. Emotional eating becomes a bad habit causing boredom, loneliness, chronic anger, anxiety, frustration, and depression. Talk about the “Great Depression” people have been going through these difficulties and have been dealing with weight complications. Situational eating mostly occurs at the movies, watching TV, sport events or even parties. As humans we eat at special events, but we could also keep things to a limit; for example a person could go to the movies and other events twice a month to help keep a balance and healthy diet. Physiologically, people eat due to pain; for example if someone had a headache they would eat something that you helps them soothe their mind and stomach. People can discontinue bad eating habits and develop a maintainable diet! Instead of always eating when emotionally disturbed, try activities like breathing exercises, walk, jog, cards, or even try a bubble bath to unravel your stress and pains. Thus, these ideas prove that emotions can affect a person eating habits depending on the state of the situation.
Sometimes people just eat without knowing and that’s why specialists (Mayo Clinic) call this Mindless Eating. Mindless eating is when a person eats while being distracted by other activities. For example when: eating popcorn at the theatre nobody ever realizes how fast they eat food when watching a film. This can lead to overeating because, people are more focused on another task, rather than what they are eating. Psychologist Brian Wansink, Ph.D. quotes “Eating off of a bigger plate can cause overeating because the same serving size looks so much smaller on a bigger plate than on smaller plate.” Sometimes as individuals we sometimes feel obese when looking at bigger plates whilst being hungry or craving for food. Automatically when seeing a plate that is immense people feel full and end up eating fewer. The point being is with the exact same plate people eat more while distracted by watching TV or talking on the phone because, people will be satisfied when they eat their food on the plate so fast. To help solve these problems people should try to eat in smaller amounts with fewer distractions, and instead of eating on the couch, eat in a closed room with a friend or even the dining room. Therefore, eating where there is less distraction help people eat in concise amounts and help to reduce weight.
Consequently, appetite is a desire to satisfy people’s hunger which leads to overeating. Appetite exists when plenty of energy that is preserved by metabolic needs. Physiologically, people eat due to negative feelings, because within modern day society stress is everywhere so people use food to comfort themselves, they eat soothing foods. Mindless eating is occurs while people eat while being distracted by another task. People overeat without paying attention to what they exactly eat. This idea proves that overeating can be caused by many reasons such as: desire, emotional issues or even mindless eating. It’s clear that overeating initiates situations and emotions to eat in immense quantities; this is evident, because overeating can lead to major chronic diseases.
