Mike Bunn's How To Read Like A Writer
My main idea about writing is that clarity is the most important feature in writing a successful paper. Having a clear path that allows you to write efficiently is vital when working on an essay. A clear structure is essential to allow both the author and reader to easily read and comprehend the content that is in front of them.
The first primary text that I selected to teach my main idea is a text message between a friend and me. I decided to use this genre because it is the main source of communication between people today and how they express their concerns. The interaction in a text message can possibly amount to the length of a detail email. Yet, the communication is not as quick, an email takes longer to respond to. As I typed out the text message I made sure to inform my friend the importance of clarity and how it can impact the

I taught her techniques on how to be able to know if her paper is clear enough by herself. I told her to read it to herself aloud before I sent her my own revisions. The reason I did that is because it allows my friend to better understand her own writing rather than her just fixing the mistakes that I found. It is a great technique to have a clear idea of how to format a paper properly and that it flows smoothly. I myself had trouble my first year because I was not used to writing 7-8 page essays and was accustomed to the short 5 paragraph essay. Therefore, it was hard for me to expand on my writing and kept writing without making any sense. Little did I know that I had to be clear enough for my audience to understand what I was writing and trying to convey. All I was doing was finishing my essay to earn credit without taking into consideration if it was clear enough to

An essay must have a clear thesis that will help me structure the essay. After prewriting, I learned to read everything I had written down to be able to take some ideas that might go into my paper. Before this class, I used to concentrate in one single point and write very little on other points. This class has forced me to structure my paper in a way that everyone can understand. I always tried to adopt the habit of using clear, straightforward and concise words, that way my writing is clear and effective. To have an essay that everyone understands, I know that I need to make sure that my ideas are…

I have learned that it is important to structure an essay, if one doesn’t, it can be challenging for readers to understand the paper because this can throw readers off and confuse them, not really understanding what the topic is or why it is written. Structure also gives a sense of how well a paper was written and how much time was put into it. Another thing that we learned, is important to have is good context. It is a valuable thing to do because it shapes the meaning in what one wants to communicate. I have noticed that before, I used to just write and not think about if it made sense or if it was relevant to what my topic was about, but now, my organization has improved a bit to where it is easier to identify such…

I think the most important part of the writing process is formatting because without the proper formatting the reader wouldn’t be able to know what direction the context is going in. I can use this writing process in the future by using the correct formatting so that not only can the reader understand my view against the subject but also because a correctly formatted writing lets the reader know that you know in great detail what your subject is about.…

Were you surprised by the research findings in David Crystal’s “2b or Not 2b?” showing that texting improves literacy skills? Think about your own use of texting, and how it differs from more formal kinds of writing you do (including email). Try rewriting a couple text messages as email to see what you do differently—then revise some email as text messages. Finally write an essay comparing your writing in texts and email (and/or twitter and/or facebook) and reflecting on the differences.…

Kurt Vonnegut. I’ve never heard of him, at least ‘til this point in my life. I don’t know how, because he seems like the kind of author we’d of learned about or even have read some of his pieces by now. I like his style. He’s one of those writers that talks to the reader as opposed to talking above them. He uses those simple words that Stephen King was talking about in Toolbox, a cut and dry vocabulary. No fluff like that Ralph Waldo Emerson. Based off of How to Write With Style alone, it’s easy to tell that Vonnegut writes with a certain swagger. He mentions the key to writing with that style is injecting your writing with a little bit of what makes you you. Your pauses between sentences, your vocabulary… just your overall mannerisms. They bring life to the otherwise lifeless words on this or any other…

My strategy for writing a paper requires me write a rough draft, take sometime to reread it and then type it making sure everything is spelled correctly. Then making sure all my grammar is correct through out my entire paper also, making sure that I have the correct punctuation everywhere its needed. Then after typing up everything I go through the paper one last time to make sure there isn’t anything I need to add or take out which is usually where I see where I need to change my sentence structure and add certain works or move sentences to different paragraphs.…

Over the course of the years I have been in school, my writing has developed greatly. My writing has evolved throughout the years but this semester is when my writing became the best I have seen it. Due to my experience and my evolution of writing, my definition of good, effective writing may differ from other people’s perspectives. Defining something as “good” can be quite vague in the sense that good means many different things such as desirable, righteousness, and well. In my first and second “Theory of Writing” paper, I stated that the aspects that make writing good and effective are: having ideas that flow together nicely, not drifting off topic and to not be redundant with your word choice and sentences. I still at this point in the semester…
