Foreword to the Design
The Design of Point-to-Point Microwave Communications was created for the full understanding of the subject Wireless Communications. The students are expected to apply the lessons from their lecture and from their researches conducted for this study. The researchers were asked to make a design of microwave link with a minimum of thirty kilometers distance between the transmitter and receiver. The sites chosen to be wirelessly connected are Timberland Sports and Nature Club in San Mateo, Rizal and the Marketing Office of Filinvest Land Inc., in Alabang, Muntinlupa. Timberland Sports and Nature Club (TSNC) belongs to the Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI). One of FLI’s main offices is located in Alabang which is approximately thirty kilometers away from TSNC in San Mateo. The designers were able to determine the distances, geographical coordinates, ground elevation, obstruction, climate and other factors that must be considered. More information was collected to build a more comprehensive document for the readers. Tables and graphs for the related data and computations are provided to make a clearer presentation.
Introduction to the Site
In every organization, transfer speed of information is very vital in the operation. If their information is fast, more work can be done and more objectives will be met. However, if data transmission is slow, less tasks can be accomplished and more time will be wasted.
In a company with different branches, distance will be a problem for data transmission. Without any direct connections, it will be very difficult to share information between branches. Filinvest Land, Inc. (FLI), a subsidiary of Filinvest Development Group, is one of the leading real estate developers in the Philippines. Timberland Sports and Nature Club (TSNC), a world-class, exclusive membership country club is one of the project of FLI. It is located in the highest crest of Timberland Heights, San Mateo Rizal. With its height and natural surroundings, urban access is limited. Communication is not one of its assets. Setting up a link between a main office of Filinvest Land Inc., and Timberland Sports and Nature Club is one solution for this problem. Using a microwave communication system can give way to the needed internet connection for data transmission in the said Club in San Mateo. By doing so, an inter-office connection will be made. Faster transactions and operations will be available for the company. There will be a higher customer satisfaction, therefor more profit for the organization.
Introduction to Microwave
Microwave communication is the transmission of signals via radio using a series of microwave towers. Microwave communication is known as a form of “line of sight” communication, because there must be nothing obstructing the transmission of data between these towers for signals to be properly sent and received. The technology used for microwave communication was developed in the early 1940’s by Western Union. The first microwave message was sent in 1945 from towers located in New York and Philadelphia. Following this successful attempt, microwave communication became the most commonly used data transmission method for telecommunications service providers. Microwave transmission is considered a 'Line of Site' technology. This is because the proper functioning of microwave transmission requires that the airspace between two microwave towers in clear of mountains, buildings, and other objects that could possibly block signals from being intercepted by the towers. Microwave transmission is limited by this need for a clear line of sight, in addition to being susceptible to attenuation by the atmosphere. For these reasons, microwave transmission is only widely used in areas inaccessible by LAN or other transport methods.
