Mentoring: My Most Rewarding Underprivileged

Mentoring at a high risk school has been my most rewarding extracurricular activity. While I have always enjoyed volunteering, I did it because it was apparently helpful and often fun. Mentoring an underprivileged first grade boy made me realize that a single person can truly make an impact. I gained an entirely new perspective when I talked with, listened to, and helped him with schoolwork, his home life, and more. His academics and disciplinary troubles improved dramatically simply because I showed that I cared. His struggles were immensely different from those I have experienced for a multitude of reasons, so I was always learning and growing even though I was focused on his growth rather than my own.
