memorable journey
Last summer I decided to prove myself and took an English course at Cambridge, England. It was a huge thing for me, as it was going to be my first time travelling alone.
I was about to leave Chile when I realized everything was going to be different from now on, but I couldn’t feel any happier. I wanted to prove myself; at least that’s what I used to say. But, to be honest, I didn’t even know what to expect. The only thing I knew for sure was that a lady named Patricia would be waiting for me, and that she was going to be my host mom throughout this whole experience.

This course consisted on being overseas for over two months taking English classes five days a week. It supposed to improve our language skills and get us involve in the, so different, customs of England. I would say the course was all right, and I actually rather enjoyed it. I had the opportunity to know a lot of the UK, and other countries as well. Moreover, Cambridge was a lovely place to stay because it was quite small and safe. Actually, one of the things I did the most was just being chilling around Cambridge, and going to the shopping centre that I deeply fell in love with.

Days passed by, and I was beginning to feel a bit more comfy with England and my school. I met lots of people from around the whole world, but, yeah, I ended up hanging out with a couple of Argentineans. Every single day after school we went straight to Costa to grab something to drink, and then to the shopping centre to see what was new. Moreover, every Thursday we went to Ballare, which was the most famous international pub in Cambridge, and had a blast just meeting new people. I would say my days at England were quite nice, as for the first time I felt that I didn’t have anything to worry about.

I used to wait for weekends because those were the days I visited new countries nearby England. I started by going to Scotland, where I had a great time walking days around Edinburgh. Then, I visited The Netherlands, where I just enjoyed myself. Then I decided to go to France, where everything was about love. Next, it was the turn for Spain, where I was delighted to hear a bit of Spanish. And lastly, I visited places close to Cambridge like London, Manchester, Leeds, and York. I had a great time meeting new places and realities and, even though I was alone, most of the time I had the chance to meet locals that showed me a bit of their life.

Being studying overseas was a great experience because, in one certain way, I learnt how to ‘survive’. Also, the people I met and the things I saw were something that I will never forget. I realized how different people see the world, and because of that, I learnt how to get involve in realities, which are not similar as the one I had. And last but not least, I improved my language skills just by being there trying to ‘survive’, as I said before. All these reasons proved that my experience in Cambridge, England was a unique one, and a journey that I will always treasured in my heart. That is why I considered it as a memorable journey.

The day Santiago left, was possibly the saddest day of my life. While I had told him I would look with hope, and that was true, I also looked with longing and desire. I missed him terribly, and it tortured me not knowing whether he missed me too. I put on a brave face for him, but inside I was reeling from the realization he may not come back. It was awful, and so I did not even bid him farewell on the day of his departure. I was worried I would drop the mask of bravery and independence and beg him to stay, and even worse he probably would.…

The night when my family fled Argentina for a new life, the sky was dark and the breeze was crisp. I still recall the smooth, salty air that swam through the tangles of my un-brushed hair as we sped off to Ezeiza International Airport in my quiet reverie. My father was young, and had not yet descended into an insanity that would come to consume my life. My mother on the other hand, was aged with a profound sadness and riddled with an eccentric apprehension of a foreign land. We arrived at the airport with spared time and waited anxiously to aboard our flight. I glanced at my mother and watched my baby brother suckle her breast. "Mama, adonde vamos?" Mama, where are we going? I asked. "Vamos a un lugar mejor de aqui." We're going to a place that’s better than here. Finally, our time had come to board the plane. Looking back one last time, my father knelt down on the floor and bid farewell to our motherland with a kiss, right there in the middle of the airport. It was a seal on our former life and it marked a march into the unknown.…

This English course has given me a boost by making me write different types of essay, which in my opinion, was essential to my writing development. Honestly, I feel like I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. I would also like to emphasize that I found the book we used extremely helpful. And most importantly, all the strategies taught were a significant support to all of us, mainly the rhetorical ones.…

Starting from a week before I was anxious, nervous and excited all at the same time, it was too many feelings at once. It was hard to control myself. Being used to something and then all of a sudden having to go live somewhere else. Practically it was new to me, because I didn’t remember anything at all from the four years I lived over there.…

The summer post-secondary was awesome. Parties, Mexico and parties in Mexico filled my vacation. My friends and I were well past "carefree"; we partied without fretting and acted without thinking. Unfortunately, I had become accustomed to this life and staying at home every night was, at first, very challenging. My new responsibility to school made turning down people when they asked for me to go out with them difficult. I was a "social butterfly", but had clipped my own wings.…

I 've been a student in University of Greenwich since October, and I can honestly say that I am more than pleased with the lessons I 've attended. The majority of the teachers are highly educated, so that gives us the opportunity to learn more things through the experience they have and as Albert Einstein said ' 'The only source of knowledge is experience ' '. I think since studying at the University of Greenwich of all my expectations have been met through the material our teachers provide us. Generally, the high standard of all the courses makes me try more and more and gives me motivation, forgetting the difficulties I face. I feel very comfortable being with my other colleagues and since I am a student of the University I became very social and the good knowledge of the English language gives me an advantage that other students don 't have.…

The first place I visited was xxx, a town near xxx, because I was invited for some days by a cousin who has a house there. I went with some friends and cousins and we spent there just five days, but it was enough time to want to come back next summer! We stayed on the beach for hours, in the mornings, just lying and asleep, taking enough energy for the rest of the day and for the night! At night, we went out until next morning. We danced, met people, walked near the beach... while we watched the moon in silence.…
